Sigh... Stompbox nostalgia's getting expensive.

With all my distortion-pedal-swapping lately, I started thinking back to the old days. Back when I started playing in about 1974, I worshipped the Lafayette Radio & Electronics catalog. My first amp came from there: a 3-watt solid-state Tempo.

I spent hours comparing the descriptions of the two fuzz boxes they carried, but why? The expensive, fancy one was the name-brand Univox Super Fuzz - at $29.95 it was out of my league. Their less expensive model was the LRE Fuzz Sound - priced at a more-managable $14.95. I saved my allowance and then got my Dad to drive me to the nearest Lafayette store one Saturday. Such a proud moment - Junior's first fuzz box!

Thirty-plus years later, I have no idea what it sounded like - probably like poo-poo caa-caa, but what did I know then? I remember clearly what it looked like, and that I performed on it my first pedal mods. New, it had a hardwired input cable and an output jack. However, you were nobody if you didn't have a curly cord running to your guitar. So, I at first swapped the cable and jack. I rewired it so I could plug into the jack with my curly cord, then connect the built-in cord to the amp. Later, I replaced the built-in cable with a second jack like any normal pedal.

Several years later, I replace the LRE with a proper MXR Distortion+. The LRE was gutted when my keyboard player needed a stompbox enclosure to some homemade project.

Anyway, I couldn't remember the exact name of this uh, classic, so I did a little web search. Found a little bit about it, and lo and behold - there was actually one for sale on eBay last week. Really nice condition, too. It was sitting at about $25 last week, so I saved it in my watch list. Saturday, I checked my email, and found a reminder, "Watched auction ending soon." Oh, crap! I almost forgot! I got into eBay quick and found it, with 12 minutes left, sitting at $99, where it stayed until the auction closed, with no bid from me. I'm nostalgic, but I'm not nuts. But ain't she a beauty?

That's right - powered by a single AA battery. Forget arguing about the merits of 12 or 18 volt power vs. the traditional 9 volts - this baby was packin' a whopping volt-and-a-half. I wish I could have it back just for fun, but not for $99. Sheesh.

I'm a sucker for anything in hammertone paint.

Re: Sigh... Stompbox nostalgia's getting expensive.

I remember going into Layfayette's store here that's funny.

My first pedal was a Little Big Muff ~1978 ran that into my 20wt Premier 1x12 SS combo. It was great the fuzz sounded like a large crowd screaming, heehee.

Stompbox Nostalgia

Sounds like a cool band name :D

Re: Sigh... Stompbox nostalgia's getting expensive.

In the mid-80's I had this Ibanez chorus pedal. It was the 80's after all, and some time in the mid-90's I sold the thing off for chump change.

A few years ago I get some odd streak of nostalgia and go looking for one on eBay for stupid money in a BIN. I would see them mostly being put up for dumb amounts of money, obviously a ploy hoping that if they put it up long enough someone will bite.

I check back every so often and one night I snap one up for something silly like less than $30.

I got it, plugged it in and played with it for ten minutes and then put it on a shelf. I haven't touched it since.

Now, sure enough, I'm seeing them going on eBay for stupid amount of money and actually selling.

On one hand, I don't play it. At all. Ever. It would make sense for me to unload it.

On the other hand I don't trust myself to be smart enough to not get nostalgic again and want to get another...which would likely be for stupid amounts of money.

Everything will end up going up in value if it sits long enough.....

Those CS-9s are great pedals!

I'm one of those chumps that picked that pedal up for $25 or whatever... I sold off my FL-9 for a bunch of cash...

I always hated that pedal.

Re: Sigh... Stompbox nostalgia's getting expensive.

When I get nostalgic for old gear, I find its much easier to buy a picture of it rather than the real thing. The picture can be used to decorate my office walls.

Just last week, I bought, what... about $350 worth of pedals? For $3.

I had a Heathkit distortion/fuzz pedal. (for you kids not old enough- Heathkit was Radio Shack's "project" division- you could build little kits for all kinds of little projects) It had this foot sized cast iron housing and ran off an AA battery. It sucked. I traded it to a buddy who promptly loaded the guts to his DS-1 into it. That ruled.

Re: Sigh... Stompbox nostalgia's getting expensive.

you are writing exactly what i feel about trying to get another wine red guild S60-D ... the first guitar i ever owned and the only guitar i ever owned that i do not still own ... would be for nostalgia purposes only ... and i cant pull the trigger (they come around once a month or so) for ~$300-$450 ... too many things i'd rather spend the money on that i would actually use

Re: Sigh... Stompbox nostalgia's getting expensive.

You should have bought it. :) (Unless you're not a fuzz guy anymore) Heck I just bought a Skreddy Zero that will probably be worthless in 15 years for $200+. At least the vintage Muffs I GAS for will appreciate in value.

I love that Boss pic, so classic. :bigok:

Not everything...

Better to invest in the stockmarket then gear.

I don't get nostalgic all that often because I've tended to keep just about every pedal I've ever bought. They ALL get used on something... not just guitar but I'll run things through 'em while mixing. Run the vocal or drum kit through an electroharmonix flanger 'cause I can't find anything I like in a $2000 tc electronics box!

The only pedals that get sold are the ones that see zero action on the playing field either because there's something 'kooler' that makes the same bleeps & blaps or 'cause it just outright sucks ballz.

Almost ALL stompboxes are worth a minimalist something in my world.

Re: Sigh... Stompbox nostalgia's getting expensive.

not worth it. i mean wear and tear: you stomp on it. probably would screw up the chain - when it is off you still may get a signal. you'd probably have to mod it to connect electricity instead of a battery. probably has cheap components. but maybe not. either way 100$ is the average cost for a high quality pedal that is sought after. I kinda want a v-twin and those are going used for $300...I could see those going up one day.

I like that view. Something like an old Rosac NuWah fuzz/wah is not my main fuzz, but you can lay down a really cool solo with it, or an interesting backing track.

Or I could basically admit I'm a ppack rat when it comes to pedals. ;)

Re: Sigh... Stompbox nostalgia's getting expensive.

That's a great story Rich S, and I'm sure many of us can relate. My take on it is that life's too short not to thoroughly enjoy the things we love, sure, they are just "things" but if they create more joy and beauty in the world while we're here then they're worth spending money on. When I think of some of the useless things that I've spent $100 or much more on, it makes my pedals/amps/guitars/recording software/plug-ins etc seem all the more worthwhile. Of course we have to draw the line somewhere, and that's where discernment comes in, but if it's something we know we will use and that will make us want to play guitar and explore, then IMO it's money well spent!

Cheers...................wahwah

Re: Sigh... Stompbox nostalgia's getting expensive.

...and I'm trying to find two of the three at a reasonable price!

I have an MIJ BF-2 on my board now. I'm looking to replace my CE-3 with a CE-2, but it looks like I'm going to spend upwards of $80 for it (hence, no hundred-dollar LRE Fuzz Sound's for me).

The DM-2? That was a great pedal - just enough delay time, great sound, in a compact package. I liked it a lot more than the digitals I replaced it with (after the pedalboard, all the rest of the band's gear, and van were stolen in 1984).

But these days, there's no way I'm buying a DM-2; those things are stupid expensive. My current Rocktron's do a great job and cost me $25 and $27 respectively (used). I wish Boss would make a simple 3-knob, no-presets, 350 msec, analog-voiced digital delay; basically a digital DM-2 and sell it at around $65. If they did, I'd own a pair. But they didn't - Rocktron did.

Re: Sigh... Stompbox nostalgia's getting expensive.

Heh I currently have DM-2 on loan from a friend. I love this thing, she got it for free as a present from her guitar teacher.
