Signature guitar pickups...

Ok, say you get a Signature/artist guitar, ( thinking les paul, or somthing with 2 hb's) you like the bridge pickups, but dont like the neck. What would you do! Change the pickup! OR would this be sacrilidge, since you purposely bought it because of the artist...ideas?

Re: Signature guitar pickups...

My philosophy: I bought it, I own it, I'm the one who has to play it. If I don't like a pickup, out it goes! The ONLY exception to the rule would be if said artist was a friend of mine and gave me the guitar for free.

Yep, that pretty much sums it up.

Re: Signature guitar pickups...

Do you have said artists' rig? chops? endorsee status?

It's your money. Do what you want. :burnout:

Re: Signature guitar pickups...

I've come pretty close to swapping out the pups in my Satriani. I think it's great when people really make instruments their own custom guitar. Like my friend who baught a Petrucci model but threw in a JB and Air Norton neck, sounds even better. The only reason I wouldn't swap out pups in a signature guitar is to either maintain the originality for future investment or because you already love it. I already love the tone so I see no need to swap out the pups.

Re: Signature guitar pickups...

It depends on the rareness of the instrument. I wouldn't do a 'HEY DOOD LETS PUT A FLOID RULZ AND SUM EMGS ON THAT THINKGS GONNA BE KILLERRRRRRR \m/ ' on BB King's Lucille for instance...:laugh2:

If it's a normal production signature guitar... why not? Let's say the EVH or JP Ernie Ball instruments. I can't see the blasphemy on that.

Re: Signature guitar pickups...

Hmmm i'm thinking of getting the robert smith ultracure. Has 2 59's in her, and i know the neck 59' aint that great, so i was thinking of swapping her out with an Alnico 2, or a Phat cat. that way i can get most o f the cure tones ( they used alot of Jazzmasters back in the day, to get that p90 sound)

Re: Signature guitar pickups...

Well...a Les Paul IS a Signatuire guitar and I swaped BOTH pickups in it, I aso own a Jimmy Vaughan Strat that I swapped all 3 pickups in. If you buy a guitar and can't feel like yoiu are getting to use all of it then why buy it?! It's not a 55 strat and you're not looking to add a floyr rose...just do it! But, FWIW...a Phat Cat/P-90 sounds nothing at all like a Jazzmaster pickup.

Re: Signature guitar pickups...

I wouldn't have any particular problem swapping out pickups (or any other parts) on a signature model, but I kinda doubt I'd be willing to pay typical signature model prices unless it was already exactly how I wanted it. In most cases, I would probably be happier buying a cheaper model and modding it up to my standards.

One exception I can think of is the Gretsch Rev. Horton Heat. As far as that type of guitar goes, I can't imagine anything better. Which is good, because the damn thing costs well over $3,000.

+1 on all counts

Re: Signature guitar pickups...

I'm with Martian but I'd change out the pups even if the artist gave them to me was a friend, he'd understand.

On the subject of changing stock pups. A LP is a signature guitar as was said. I'll give you a hint on my opinion concearning your question. I like Bad Coconuts, what do you make of that? ;)
