Signature models.

Thoughts on Sig guitars?

Do you have any?

I have a small collection of sig guitars: A Paul Gilbert Ibanez, Zappa and Tweedy SG models, a Grace Potter V, Thunderhorse Explorer and a Richie Kotzen tele.

May add a Rudy Schenker V to the collection.

Re: Signature models.

Wow, nice collection.

Being a huge Gilmour fan I've always been a fan of the Red and Black Strats. Also, I grew up idolizing Jimmy Page's LP and Slash's Derrig. In fact I have the Page wiring in my LP and I feel like my next guitar will be a Lemon LP I can put A2Ps back in.

Re: Signature models.

My thought on that Grace Potter V is that it's almost as sexy as her voice!
Personally though, play it an if it sounds good, go for it :)
I played a jim root Tele a while back, an even though the EMG's were not my cup of tea, the unplugged tone and feel was superb! I considered getting it and just swapping the pickups to a more vintage set.

Re: Signature models.

I think they're kinda dumb if you play them live. Other than that they're alright.

The only signature models I'd ever even think about buying (nut still never use live) are the Jerry Cantrell Rampage, Gibson Custom Shop Tony Iommi Signature, and a Red Special that is a 100% accurate replica down to the screws, unless I get to completely modify it to make it "mine" with a Kahler vibrato system, black everything, add a few extra switches, and some pickups wound to sound exactly how I want it.

HAVE: PRS Santana Signature 10 Top, Fender David Gilmore NOS Black Strat, and Eric Clapton Fender Signature Strat
WANT: Les Paul Peter Frampton Signature, and Fender Ritchie Blackmore Signature Strat
THINKING ABOUT: Les Paul Tom Scholz Signature (it's a relic model and I prefer NOS)

thurston moore jazzmaster w/ antiquity 2 pickups. i love it. this is a refined and simple guitar. perfect intonation from the factory. very easy to play despite the 7.5" radius.

Re: Signature models.

Ahhhhhh Mr. Archer, it is you that has the awesome Tweedy SG! Love that guitar.

Re: Signature models.

Sigs generally aren't my cuppa, but I'm very interested in your thoughts on the Zappa SG. I remember that one from the Roxy and Elsewhere album.

I dont get it. Why would it be dumb? If I buy a guitar I would buy it to play it. Not to store it away. I have retired an acoustic guitar however.

Re: Signature models.

I have a thing with playing sig gear. I can't do it. Something about getting my own tones from someone else's personal gear.

Re: Signature models.

I sure wish I could find a used Grace Potter V for a good price, but it's probably not going to happen.

Do you still have the Paul Gilbert Fireman?

The only signature stuff I have is Dunlop Bonamassa and Hendrix wah's and fuzz's.

Re: Signature models.

Care to elaborate? I don't understand why.

Same here, none of the ones I have are glaring. The Kotzen has his sig on the head but it is pretty small. The Paul Gilbert is quite well known but the others look like pretty stock guitars. I bought the Tweedy and Thunderhorse not realizing they were signature models.

I returned teh Fireman when the Thunderhorse came available at my local dealer. No contest on that deal....the Thunderhorse has gone up in value while the Firemen wont go up for many many years if they ever go up in value.

I dont sound like any of them on any of the instruments so that is not a problem for me.

I go for a sound that is a lot like Kotzen's tone so the Kotzen fit straight away...it is also an amazing telecaster.

It is a fantastic guitar, slim neck, very low frets (can be a problem for some people if you have a heavy hand) and fast action. Tons of tones in the instrument. I have a hard time describing tones so here are a couple vids showing the sounds the guitar can make. Gibson only made 400 and they are long gone....values are already climbing.
