Silver Jubilee 2X12 combo

Re: Silver Jubilee 2X12 combo

Do a search on Ebay for Shuguang 12AX7. Sometimes, they sell for $5 a piece, and they're basically the same as GT12AX7C's.

The Jubilee has plenty of gain, but you're right....7 is where the gain has plenty of chunk and sustain, but it's still defined.
I think mine is set like this. P5, B10, M6, T5, V4-6, V6-7, G4-8.

That's cool that you can plug it into a 4-12. You'll dig it.

What about the GT 12AX7M Mullard reissue? Of course, they're a lot more though. Worth the extra cash?

Re: Silver Jubilee 2X12 combo

I'd also recommend a 12ax7c type preamp tube. However I think that the Jub needs to be turned up to get to that special tone. Changing tubes isn't as important as playing her loud. The 2555SL I have still has the stock tubes and the tone is great as long as the master is around 3pm. I re-tubed my original jub and there isnt a huge difference from what I can tell between the JJ ecc83s that were in there and the GT 83's that I put in.
Also GJ made a great point of running a rack piece in the loop and control the overall volume that way. I use a intelliflex and it's perfect. I also like it in low output since it sags more.

Re: Silver Jubilee 2X12 combo

Great stuff guys, appreciate all the tips. This amp sure does have a sound all its own imo. Hard to describe, typical Marshall but better sounding than my old JCM 800, which was an 81 or 82 vertical input no channel switching.

Re: Silver Jubilee 2X12 combo

Good buy- they have that same amp at my local Guitar Center- excellent condition for $1400.

Re: Silver Jubilee 2X12 combo

Well, I put in a JJ ECC83S in V2 and an EH 12AX7 in V3 (Tungsol already in V1) replacing two Sovteks, which I normally don't like and played my doubleneck with a Seth bridge in the 6. Sounded shrill and not too good, lol. I just found two more Tung Sols that I had ordered a while back, brand new and those are going in V2 & 3 tomorrow. Getting too late tonight to switch tubes and then crank the amp. Before I do that though I'm gonna bring my Jackson with the super distortion in it down and see what that sounds like, cuz that was the guitar I used the other night when it sounded like one of the most incredible Marshalls I'd ever heard.

Re: Silver Jubilee 2X12 combo

That's cool that all the forum Jubilee owners have a different model.
LesPaul1981 has the 2555 100W head, I have the 2550 50W fullsize stack, Simon F has the 2553 50W ministack, and 75LesPaul has the 2558 2-12 50W combo. It would be awesome to own all of them, and work on having a complete Jubilee collection! Then, you'd just have to get the 1-12 combo.

Re: Silver Jubilee 2X12 combo

I love these amps. Especially the silver tolex, its just so badass and pops out at you when you look at them. That pic in GJ's home is so f'ing rad. He's got me beat. The full stack of the jub and the metal grill fully loaded bogner. I wish my bogner had the white or silver tolex that some early bogners had. The classic has the silver front plate too...reinholds got some good taste.

Re: Silver Jubilee 2X12 combo

Nice looking little amp. For some reason I never got in to the Silver Jubilees. I don't know why though. I just never did.

Running a rack unit or pedal with level control through the effects loop does the trick as far as taming the overall volume, but it doesn't allow one thing.....pushing the PI and power amp tubes. Choaking the volume down with something through the effects loop is essentially the same as just turning down the master volume to the same level with nothing in the loop at all.

These effects loops are series loops. As soon as a plug is inserted in the "send" jack, the signal is rerouted through that cable (like a train track switch), through the effects unit and back in to the return, to the PI and then the power amp where the MV resides.

Use an attenuator if you want to hear more PI and power tube clipping, otherwise it's just pre-amp clipping you hear. We all know the roar of a Marshall comes from pushing that power section.

Re: Silver Jubilee 2X12 combo

I use a hotplate but I notice that it does rob the amp of that cranked tone - when I play loud in the studio or live the tone is so much more intense due to the speaker breakup. I think a rack piece or attenuator is the same general type of tone robbing.

Re: Silver Jubilee 2X12 combo

The best I've ever heard the Jubilee sound was when it was cranked with both cabs side by side, pushing the front with a Banzai Coldfusion. And a LP with Duncan Custom. The best highgain Marshall tone I've ever heard. I rarely take that amp out of my home though......I can't risk banging up the tolex.

Plus, the XTC is more my sound anyway. I like smoother highs, and the Jubilee has really crunchy highs. Even still, the Jubilee sounds great, and it's an exact Marshall tone that I can't really get with the Bogner. Even though both EL-34 and capable of highgain, they don't sound the same at all.

One of the best things about the Jubilees is that they sound pretty good without being cranked. In my previous band I used my 2553 and the other guitarist had a 2555. We played lots of small pub gigs and didn't use attenuators. As long as you can get up to drum kit volume the Jubilees sound great.

I like the Hot Plate for cranking my JMP 2204 and playing at drum kit volume, but I find I don't need it with the Jubilee.

Bedroom volume with a Hot Plate just doesn't work for me - I prefer to use a solid state amp or a pedal!

Re: Silver Jubilee 2X12 combo

GJ how do you set up the XTC? Not to jack the thread but I can get close to jubilee tones by using the blue channel, b1, high, old setting on back, medium excursion and by connecting the loop with just a chord and cranking the master on the back and using the channel volume to control the overall volume. The only thing the Jubilee needs is a bit of compression and she is my favorite marshall tone.

Re: Silver Jubilee 2X12 combo

I gotta bring this amp in for a tune-up. I put in the two new Tung-Sol preamp tubes, but the amp is still so noisy. I mean the noise is nearly as loud as the amp when cranked. Maybe the power tubes? It has two Svetlana's but I don't know how old they, or the Tung-Sol in V1 may be. I guess the easier test at the moment would be to put the JJ I have in V1 and see if it's the tube, or take the three new Groove Tube Mullards I got out of the 73, which is really quiet, and see.

Hey Gear--I put it through my 4X12 and woo hoo! Sound is the same but beefier, although as a combo it still sounds great.

Yeah, there's really no amp as great at copping Marshall tones as the XTC. I know what you mean about flicking some switches and cloning Marshalls, including the Jubilee. I could definitely do it, but the Bogner will always have that throaty midrange that's bigger than the Jubilee. You could also simulate the crunchy highs by using the red channel with a lot of presence.

Honestly, I'm not so much of a metal guy as I was when I was young and bought my first Jubilee. I actually use my amps in a more vintage way now, and go for more of a Joe Perry/Bonamassa/SRV type vibe.
My favorite settings are usually with the masters high and volume lower.

Re: Silver Jubilee 2X12 combo

I currently have JJ KT-77s in mine as they add more bottom end. I switch back and forth between those and SED EL34s. These amps really come alive around 5 to 6 on the Output Master.
