Local guitar shop has a fender deluxe reverb - silverface. Any good? How similar to a blackface would this be?

Re: Silverface versus blackface Deluxe Reverb?

what year? late 60's? mid 70's?

if it has no push pull crap it may be fairly close to a blackface.

ive heard some later 70's models with the pull boost that sounded great, just dont pull the boost. they sound horrible

if you can play it, use your ears. just dont pay blackface prices for silverface amps

...silverfaces look cooler.

I'd blackface a silverface...

or put a silverface plate on a blackface :D

They want $999 for it....

Re: Silverface versus blackface Deluxe Reverb?

I've never heard a silverface DR that sounded quite as deep and lively and responsive and ballsy as a 1967 or before blackface DR. But I'm very picky! $999 is a good price though. Lew

Blackface deluxes are pretty amazing for blues tone and classic 60s style rock - especially with a strat.

The silver face deluxes are nice for clean sounds - but without the complexity of blackface tone.

Very Helpful. Thanks.

Definitely depends on the year, condition and how original it is. Yes, Deluxe Reverbs (silverface or blackface) are great blues amps, hell every old style Fender amp can kick for the blues. Gotta watch out for the push/pull boost ones and master volumes (I think they made silverface deluxes with master volumes, not sure, please correct me if Im wrong). Theyre pretty good, but the ones for the late 60s that were pretty much just blackface specs (maybe a slight circuit change) but with the silver panel and different grille cloth. And you gotta watch out for the speakers (especially if its a mid 70s one). I think those speakers tend to be real farty if you want some natural overdrive, or thats what I heard, I dont really have heavy silverface experience. Hope this helps.

Re: Silverface versus blackface Deluxe Reverb?

I have a 1967 Drip edge silverface DR. Its a really good amp. This is the first year of the SF, so some DR from this year are SF and some are BF. Fender did not give a lot of details on exactly when they made the switch, but I believe the primary circuit in the SF DR is pretty much the same as a BF from the same year. Sometime in 68 they started making additianl circuit changes and the screwed them up. The ons from the early to mid seventies are OK, but the ones after that were kind of thin sounding IMHO.

There are some things you should consider. Does it have the original speaker? If it does it should be replaced. It hase a lot more value with the original speaker and you don't want to blow it. I have an emminence speaker in mine, it sounds OK,but I am probably going to change it to something that will hold the bottom better.

It will more than likely need a Cap job. Most caps have a life span of about 25 years, so these are already past its lifespan if they are original.

It would be a good idea to take the amp once you own it to a competant tech and have the whole amp tuned up. Its amazing how much better it will sound once all those worn out componants are replaced!
