silvertone alternative

is there anything newer than silvertone that would achieve that tone (white stripes) - my mom is kind of anal about older amps, i'm not quite sure why she can dictate what i buy since she knows little to nothing about any form of electrical equipment. but that's a different story

Re: silvertone alternative

Which model Silvertone is the one Jack White uses? This may or may not be a option, but maybe you or someone could build a clone of the silvertone amp? I know what you mean about parents not getting the concept of older = better, none of my non-musician friends get it either. They think I buy "antiques". But, here's a website with tons of silvertone schematics. Maybe its an option to build?

http://www.schematicheaven.com/bargainbin.htm

Scroll down and to the right and you'll see a list of the silvertone amp models. Some appear fairly simple, while others might take a couple days to get to grips on what the heck is going on.

Re: silvertone alternative

Just did a search on these forums and found that White stripes play through a 1485 (6x10") version of the 1484 twin twelve model. There's a bunch of amp building forums around, and I've seen guys on DIY pedal forums take on builds for people for the cost of parts. Maybe someone would take on this project for you, if you've got your heart set on this tone and your parents wont change their minds?

Re: silvertone alternative

I know the last amp Reverend put out (Kingsnake?) had a 3-position switch American, British, and Lo-Fi. The lo-fi position was supposed to mimic the sound of those off-brand non-Fender/non-Marshall amps of which Jack White's Silvertone is the most obvious example these days. I don't know how well Reverend's switch does the job, but you can probably get a decent deal on a used one. It's a solid, versatile amp that might get a better mom approval rating that a rusty old Silvertone (psst... don't tell her about Reverend getting out of the amp biz last year).

Re: silvertone alternative

I don't know of anything thats being made today that can capture that kind of garage vibe, there are some new Supro amps but they cost a good bit...in fact everything I can even think of costs a good bit!

Go for the Silvertone, I know what your mom is saying but shop carefully and just do it...I've owned several Silvertones over the years and they are cool amps...they have a very cool tone and if that it the tone you are looking for they that's the way to get it.

Re: silvertone alternative

My mother had a problem when I bought my Silvertone(and by the way TGWIF, my amp is the Twin Twelve not the 6x10 but the jack white tones are still too be had) but she eventually got over the way it looked(very VERY beat up) once she heard how it sounded.

Re: silvertone alternative

Anyone who owns a 1484/1485: where does the jack white tones come from? I've read that the reverb and trem is pretty much useless, and if the tones dont need to have the channels jumpered like on a plexi, you can pretty much eliminate almost half the circuit by getting rid of the second channel and the reverb/trem. Actually, you'll get it down to 4 tubes altogether, and around 21 resistors give or take a couple for the entire build. If that's the case, this would be a REAL easy build.

What about one of those 5 watt $99 Epi Valve Juniors? Pretty loud for five watts. Probably not loud enougn for a band withough being miked, but I like mine especially with a strat.

Sorry if I'm off the mark here.

Re: silvertone alternative

I have a 1950s Supro and a friend that has several old Silvertones. They sound nothing alike.

Re: silvertone alternative

Honestly, I'd buy an Airline guitar, or similar, and use it through any sort of Fender or Peavey for that type of sound. I realize it's not the same, but I have a feeling that the White Stripes sound is mostly that guitar and the way he plays it.

I happen to agree, Gearjoneser. That guitar has a very distinctive tone.

That Epiphone 5-watter head may be good for you. Or just a Fender Pro Junior with a Big Muff maybe?

Valco built all these amps, sears, wards, gretsch, airline.... They built amps and folks simply slapped their name on em, after they went under, I believe Multivox took over.

What S-tones does your friend have? What Supro do you have? Just curious..

Tell your mom that these old amps are built better than just about any current mass produced amp. Save for a couple filter caps, my 65 1483 has the same tubes it came with new. 41 years!! She was screamin tonight... New is generally not better when it comes to amps. My youngest lil baby is a 1972 Traynor.... It would have to be a hell of an amp for me to go new these days.

Re: silvertone alternative

sorry it took me so long to get back, does anyone know where i can buy a silvertone? i know they are out of production, but if anyone's seen one on ebay or thinks they'd like to sell me thiers, i'd be happy to take it off their hands! :)

Re: silvertone alternative

I've got a near mint Silvertone 1482 waiting for me to pick up this weekend. I also have a twintube SFX-03 waiting for me to pick it up. Did a little too much spending this week, but I've nailed down two supremely cool toys.

Re: silvertone alternative

what's a reasonable price for a silvertone 1484/5? and does any1 have clips? :)
