Simple comfortable one pickup guitar. What options ?

So let’s say like many you already have a les Paul and a Strat so single and humbucker pickups are covered. Also I have a nice acoustic.

But if I wanted a simple one pickup guitar that is comfortable and easy to play what would be your choice ? Is a melody maker pretty much the go to? Price range around $500 used and a little more new.

Define "comfortable"...I would go with something like an 80's Charvel. Can be found under the $500 and will be a great guitar for the price.

Personally, I've got a soft spot in my heart for the Peavey Rockmaster. Cheap and comfortable. Sounds great.

SG Junior, Les Paul Junior (single or double-cut), Esquire, Strat (simple pickguard swap), old Charvels, Kramer Barretta's / Focus 1000. The list goes on and on. If I needed another (I have 3 single-pickup guitars now), I would snag a good used Strat and swap the pickguard out.

Fender Musicmaster, 24" scale is comfy and the twangy telecasteresque sound is different than a strat.

+1 on a Kramer Focus 1000. Solid, killer guitar. It’s a rock and metal machine that will bring you home.

Wanna talk about a guitar that's for someone who "already [has] a les Paul and a Strat so single and humbucker pickups are covered", buy you any P90 equipped variety of LP Junior (I'd recommend this type; not my listing) and put a Wilde L610 in it.

Nothing you have ever played will sound like it. LP Juniors have their own tone to them anyway, but this pickup I'm plugging is phenomenal. Take the rock and roll balls of a P90 and throw in the articulation of a Jazzmaster pickup Wilde describes them as a perfect middle ground between these two types of pickups and they are right, plus they are only $60 new. Listen to some sound clips of this pickup and judge for yourself how great it is.

I'd go Bronco; neck pickup tone on any of the Mustang family is great, but it takes a certain sort of player to only want a neck pickup. I'd argue also for that reason, that a MusicMaster does not really sound twangy in the way that a Tele does. Also- they're tough to find for $500 , but I've seen a few go for close every so often; nearly pounced on one a couple years back for around that price actually.

(Then again- I'm the guy who doesn't understand wanting a single pickup guitar in the first place. Why choose to limit yourself, when guitars with more available tonal options are easier to obtain? One must in essence go out of one's way to seek out a more limited instrument... IGNORE ME!!!)

Thanks for that suggestion; I've been thinking of getting a cheap guitar for a trip, and the Rockmaster looks fun and suited for it, with its headphone amp & tuner. I see them all the time for $50 on CL.

Other than that, a vintage Esquire or double-cut Les Paul Junior.

Go look for the best sounding (unplugged) tele you can find and turn it into an esquire.
