Simplest Amplifier Wiring

Okay. This might be a bit of a strange question. If I have a speaker with two connectors, an input jack (I got the term right this time!), and, say, a 9-Volt battery or some other power source, what is the absolute simplest way to wire them together to get sound out of it, regardless of effects or even volume? If this is a stupid question (yes), what parts are required?

You can order a Velleman or Heathkit little amp kit -about as simple as it gets.
