Since I've been Poor...

Re: Since I've been Poor...

For standard strings, D'Addario 10's just can't be beat.... LOVE 'em! I've gotten spoiled by Snake Oil Strings, so those have been my new splurge :D

For acoustic, Elixir Nanoweb 11's seem to work fine for me :fing2:

Re: Since I've been Poor...

Great review Jeff. I keep plugging Snake Oil strings, but they are the best strings I've ever tried. Last forever and have the perfect combination of slinkiness for bending and tightness for palm muting. Pure nickel strings...in Rock (brighter tone) or Vintage (warmer tone for bright instuments).

$8.50 a set, but they last me 3-4 times longer per set than any other string. Haven't broken one in 18 months on any guitar.

Re: Since I've been Poor...

Well D'addario is one of the best. But not the best for my tastes.
I tried EB slinkys (the worst of the bunch) ,Boomers (from zakk's sets to tnt and others, they where not bad but dying to fast) ,Fenders (too warm for my taste) and Elixir!Elixir is my Favorit now.Really nice bright but defined tone ,nice attack and sustain! And lasts longer!Okay 13 euros for a pack is alot of money. But i will use tehm for some months ,so it's the same price!
The best Set for my needs is 10/52 now. It's a well balanced allround gauge ,enough Bass ,enough highs .

Re: Since I've been Poor...

Nice thread Jeff, I've been a D'Addario user for years and I've tried just about everything. But I keep coming back to D's.

+1 on D'addarios. I have tried just about everything, and nothing (except Elixir) comes close, IMO.
It is so interesting that every other string I try, I take right off (literally) because I don't like the feel.

I haven't tried Snake Oil strings yet, so I won't include those, lol.

Re: Since I've been Poor...

I've used D'Addario for at least 20 years for both guitar and bass strings. Price to sound to quality ratio is perfect to me. I've tried lots of strings from time to time and keep going back to D'Addario. I've heard of getting "bad strings" and I had no idea what anyone was talking about. Around 3 years ago I got my first bad string from D'Addario- one bad string in 20 years (and I've gone through periods of being really anal and changing strings every week...)The brand I had the worst luck with was DR. A friend that I really trust and love his tone recommended the DRs to me- and on his recommendation I bought a few sets of bass strings- this may have been around late 93-94. Oh how I hated them. I tried them a few other times in the next few years. A friend worked at a store and gave me a hella deal on a bunch of DR guitar strings around the same time. I may actually still have one of those sets. I hated them.
IMO, Gibson strings are REALLY underrated. And they've been making strings longer than anyone so they should really know what they are doing. with the price drop they had on them recently, I don't think they are overpriced at all.

I really love the Gibson Vintage Reissue strings- but those were nearly double the price of most any other strings... I don't love them that much.

Re: Since I've been Poor...

Lotta D'Addario Love here I see.....They are not perfect..but they def have the value for the $ thing down...I'd like to try the Snake Oils sometime...but I like to change strings pretty often..so right now it's not economically viable.

Hmm..where you buying them at TGB?...they are only about a dollar more a pack than most nickel-steels...for comparisons sake:

VRs
Slinkys
boomers
Markley
D'Addario

And you can buy the VRs (and Brite Wires) in 3 packs for a little less money per pack.

Re: Since I've been Poor...

I had lsr nut put on strat; so I'm checking out all the strings too. Bought a 25 box of D'Addarios 10's and got use to that standard. Then went to 11's D'Adds. I have 4-5 diff brands awaiting their turn. Got DR's 12-52's currently, sound richer than 11's; wife even notices; but tougher for me to get bends; maybe with time. Got GHS Boomers, Dean Markley blue steels & NickSteel Sigs, a bunch of heavier D'Add XL's and what I'm really waiting of from P.O. is the few packs of Snake Oils I ordered.

Have to find those slinkys somewhere's. BUt I wonder if in the end I'll be back to the 25 pack of D'Addarios; I like changing them pretty regular too.

Re: Since I've been Poor...

D'Addario XL 10-46s for several years ...

My son swears by Elixir strings. They last a long while and feel good. I use them on my Acoustic but I think they sound a little bassy ... probably the coating. Just could not get used to them on the electrics.

Re: Since I've been Poor...

Been using D'addarios for along time I've tried other brands always go back to em.Ernie balls seem to go dead quick, blue steels are good esp if you want a brighter sound.D'addarios always seem pretty consistant.(plus I like the colored ball ends lol)

Re: Since I've been Poor...

Got a few sets of the 11-49s D'Addarios today. EXACTLY what the ML79 needed :bigthumb: Tightened her right up, sustain improved a bit, and tone improved significantly.....exact same thing happened with my first ML79when I went from 10s to these D'Addario 11s. These guitars just seem to like 11s... (at least in my hands).

Not sure If I'll try the Blue Steels or not.
