Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

That's MSRP man. No one pays that.

And yea I've played the classic vibe tele. They have good pickups (much more traditional sound than fender MIM ceramics) and OK necks.

The classic vibes are IMO an attempt to get the "A Fender has to be pre-CBS, USA, and bone stock, but not for more than 1k" corksniffers to take a look at Squiers and go "WOW"... The problem is that they usually know they´re going to say "meh" long before they even see the instrument, much less play it, so I´m not so sure where the merit is ....

Or they´re an attempt to bring a more Vintage spec instrument into the hands of semi-beginners and people that otherwise yould be predominantly MIM Fender customers. Quite possibly in an attempt to sustain the corksniffery that they do admittedly earn a significant portion of their bread from. In the sense of "WOW, that squier is excellent, and has vintage specs. A Usa with the same specs must be badass, and is just as cool becasuse they still make them old school"....

It´s rare that I see people that go out and play using one, for ex on Open mic night. They generally seem to use more "run of the mill" instruments like Mexis + US Standards, or epiphones + lp studios/juniors, or more modern incarnations like Ibanez RGs, X-Series Jacksons, or LTD EC-series instruments.

Doesn´t mean they´re bad instruments, more likely it simply means that I don´t understand the marketing concept behind them.

FWIW

Wow!!

Used to be able to get Squires for $99 any day of the week. Maybe I'm just getting old and lost track of all the time and "progress" that has passed me by.

The $99 Squier is $129 now. It's still a Bullet series.

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

Street prices go from $99 up to the MIM Standards and sometimes a little more depending on the model.

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

Again, thats MSRP. Still seems steep, but we are in hard times. Everything going up but salaries.....
I know people snub thier noses at squiers, but Im very happy with my vintage modded. Was under $300 and held up to everything else they had in stock that day with brand F on it.. Only thing close what the Tex Mex tele (or something like that) as it had the Tex mex pups in it.. Mine came with Duncan designeds that were real nice, but I did upgrade them

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

It's pretty much standard procedure for retailers to start at 30% off of list. That makes a $580 list price $406 retail price. Most places sell them for $380 now. And they are $200 to $250 on the used market all day long. If you've ever played one, you might actually consider that a fair price; I sure do. They are Squier's top of the line guitars, and I think that they are better than MIM Standards in some ways (mainly cosmetically, and the fact that you can get them with a pine body). Yep; they're Squiers, but the Classic Vibe series is full of very decent guitars.

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

Those new Squier's are worth every penny of what they cost and then some!

They street for $380....some places will even let them go for $350 give or take a few dollars.

The construction on those guitars is mind blowing for $350...I mean this is the world of $1400 overdrive pedals, $1000 delay units and $2500 is a mid priced amp...

I have played quite a few of the newer Squire guitars and have to be honest...most of them could get a quicky set up, fresh strings and intonation and be on stage. Worth the coin and then some IMHO.

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

The guy up there took the words out of my mouth. Each I've played was well built, resonant and above all, FUN to play. It's a Squier. Play hard, play nice, just play the hell out of it. Lovely guitars.

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

I'll echo the sentiments of the two guys above me. The lower end Squiers do still have the same issues that they always did (but you won't pay $600 for those). The Classic Vibe series though is something else, I have played a couple and they all have been consistently brilliant for what they are.

Anyone familiar with Rob Chappers on Youtube might have seen a video the other day where they played 4 Teles blindfolded (Classic Vibe, MIM Standard, MIA Standard, and Fender Custom Shop), and they actually got the Classic Vibe mixed up with the Custom Shop. Now, draw whatever conclusions from that you will... could be clever marketing or a publicity stunt or whatever.

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

Pretty much reiterating above points but...

a) 380 sounds pretty close to actual price
2) If you've ever played one you wouldn't have made this thread. CV's right now are imo outperforming most of the the mim fenders (and I work around these daily)
3) Are you really shocked Avril has a sig guitar?

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

I've read that the Squier Classic Vibes have Tonerider pickups - Surfaris in the 50s Strat, Classic Blues in the 60s Strat and Hot Classics in the Tele (I think...). Far superior to the ceramics in MIM Fenders!

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

I got a Squier J5 Tele a few years back... It was $380 I believe. Well worth every penny. I played it exclusively for 2 years, and it's still one of my favorite guitars.

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

Remember when Agile was all the rage? Great guitars for damn near nothing. Then they thought, hmmm everybody loves us so we can charge more. The prices went up and where's Agile now? Sometimes enthusiasm and praise for a guitar is relative to its price point, and a good guitar isn't really as good (or should I say, palatable) when the price goes up.

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

I've got an Indian build Squier Vintage Modified Tele that is in the same vein as the CV series, and it's a gloriously awesome guitar. I've upgraded the electronics, pickups, and the hardware, and the nut was not cut well from the factory. Now, it's an amazing guitar, that was pretty good except for a setup when I got it bone stock. I played it for a long while completely stock expert for the nut, and lived every minute of it.

Re: Since when did Squier's start costing 600 bucks?

i had a CV60 strat for a while. although the stock pickups and hardware were decent, the neck twisted horribly within a year.... past the point of leveling with a radius block.
