singing

any advice? like i'm not talking about how to sing an play at the same time already a decent thread or 2 on that i mean on getting better at singing? like growing up i always joked about how i didn't HAVE to sing because i played so many instruments but now i cant find a singer so im a punk singer/guitarist (i found it easier to multi task with 3 chord songs) but i talk in a monotone so its hard to train my voice to do what i want it to. any tips on how to become a better singer in general? like im getting there but i feel like there must be a better way to get more control of my voice than drink a tuckfon of water and try try try again im looking to improve my stability so i can sing it right more than i sing it off key (not really off key more without key/monotonous)

Re: singing

You really need to see a voice coach and get singing lessons whether you have natural talent or not and practice the techniques to really learn to sing properly

Re: singing

its amazing how many resources are out there now! some of them free. I want to eventually get skype lessons from a coach I picked out...

Re: singing

ya good thing to work with what you have. for all the instruments I ever played I bought entry level stuff or free, and moved up only as necessary...

Re: singing

remember there is nothing new under the sun, the same concepts that melissa cross or any of them use have been the same for 1000s of years. its definitely all there on youtube, you gotta dabble and find the right path for you

for making cookie monster noises ya that is another world though lol  still based on similar techiques/approaches, just way outside the box

100% bang on. Go and find one that will work WITH you. The videos and stuff are ok, but you really need someone who knows what they are doing to LISTEN to you and give you feedback. you don't need to do this long at first either, book a month or two of lessons then come back when you need more.

I was recording a guy once who had his voice coach with him, that guy (the coach) leaning back in a chair singing at low volume had more control over his voice then I could ever hope to have.

to be blunt i would love to find someone, but i have no idea where to start my search seeing as how i work such odd hours. ima search my phonebook (omg i cant believe we actually own one lmao) tomorrow for one that will work with me and works weekends.

Re: singing

A coach can be good but you mostly need to just sing to get better. I have a radio announcer speaking voice and I have worked in real FM and AM radio, jocking a disc and announcing news and weather. So it's not a leap that I could/can sing. But I never thought I could until a college music teacher told me so. This guy could sight read music better than I could cold read news copy...so I believed him. I spent the next two years singing along to whatever was on my car tape deck...Judas Priest, Floyd, Rush....Queen. I actually learned how to sing pretty well. About 5 years ago I gave up smoking and now just a few days short of 50 I can still sing for a solid 2.5 to 3 hours a night. So to quote a shoe maker....JUST DO IT! And if people you don't know compliment you...you know you're getting somewhere. If the only people who complement you are people you know...well, not so much. Good luck.

.........my car radio is broken :'(....

but yeah thats mostly been my experence is sing in car but for some reason i am monotone still when not hearing singing with me. im at the point i feel i could do back up vocals well but as a lead vocalist i am incredibly lacking so i think i need to try the vocal coach thing.
