Single coi with 3 leads

I'm trying to wire a set of single coiles but they have three leads. read, white, and bare. The bare is soldered to the baseplate of the pickup. I'm guessing it's red and bare to pot and white to the selector. Is this right? They are making a ground noise. I don't know what kind of pickups they are but they came in a Squire strat. PLease help.

The bare goes to ground. Back of a grounded pot is usual.

Either red or white could be hot. One way will put the new pickup in phase and the other way will put it out of phase with your other pickups.

There's a 50/50 chance of getting it right the first time.

I'd probably try red as hot first and connect white to ground...same point as the bare wire is grounded to.

Try it. But if it is out of phase you'll have to reverse the red and white.

Good luck.
