Single Coil for humbucker slot

Hi guys

I have fallen in love with my jackson single coils I have from a old 90s guitar I have... the pickups rate 5.1k i think.. and I believe these have a bar magnet rather than rods.

1) I was wondering what would be comparable to these in single coil as replacements.

2) Do the rods make the pickup more trebly or middy and give it a better attack?

3) I am after a Single coil pickup that would fit in a Humbucker.

I've not used a P-90 before but from recordings I believe this would be too thick for what I want. I also want to be able to get twangy on cleans and real nice glassy solos on it.

OK cool, just need some recomentations for single coils for a basswood body and an alder body. I was thinking of the SSL-1 would be good.. I do use high gain with these and get a lot of hum is there anything which has that nice tone but without the hum.

Also do them conversion rings come in a better colour and non angled.

Re: Single Coil for humbucker slot

I would suggest the vintage rails. They have a nice glassy single coil tone, string spacing is not a problem and would get rid of the hum in high gain situations.
You could use a piece of plywood (or pickguard material) and make your own pickup conversion ring, or have someone handy do it for you. The plywood could be spraypainted in any colour you like.

They come in black, but I think you can only get them angled.

OK I ordered 1 in Black...

Just need them single coils now!!... I think the low output give a real nice attack on high gain and a nice high end I like kinda trebly but smoothish.

Re: Single Coil for humbucker slot

hmmm....I think an SSL-2 would do what you need.

Why not just use the one that you like? or is that in another guitar?

Re: Single Coil for humbucker slot

Let us know how that ring works out! That's perfect for the super mutt I'm half arsed working on!

Re: Single Coil for humbucker slot

Seymour Duncan actually makes a single coil pickup in a humbucker housing. It's the "Strat Sound Under Humbucker Cover" pickup. It's a custom shop thing, so with that, they'll probably cost quite a bit more than mass production single coils.

Here's a pic off the website:

I think Bill Lawrence makes some also. But the mounting ring idea is cool also.

The one that Fuel mentioned, the SD Phat Cat, and the Bill Lawrence L-609 are all single coil pickups whice fit into humbucker slots.
