What is the best way of reducing single-coil hum other than getting hum-cancelling pickups?

Check out the "Quieting the Beast" section in "modifications".
I've done this mod on a couple of strats and the results are great. The SCs are still not as quiet as HBs, but the hum is a lot less obvious and annoying.
