Single coil P pickups

How does the 1/4lb Single Coil P compare to the Single Coil Stack, tonally? I'm looking to hook it up to a Blackouts EQ for nu metal and SoCal punk, and like the tone of the 1/4lb pickups I've played so far but I'm trying to get around the hum.

The SD stacked-coil version of the original P Bass is noise-cancelling (obviously) but noticably less powerful than the Hot and Quarter Pound models.

Lindy Fralin has a nice take on this sort of pickup. He employs two stubby coils, arranged side by side rather than vertically. The Fralin is noise-cancelling and, in theory, could be made in various degrees of "hotness". Check out the Lindy Fralin website for more details.
