Single coil sized humbucker to pair with JB in bridge

Hello everyone, I've been a lurker here for a while and have a question I couldn't find an answer for. I am upgrading an old Jackson dinky I have, it has an alder body with a maple/rosewood bolt on neck. I've extended the fingerboard, however, that means I can only fit a single coil pickup in the neck to pair with the JB in the bridge. What do you recommend? I'm looking for something versatile; I'll be playing blues, rock, and fusion on the guitar.

Can I also use the push pull I already have on my tone knob to switch from parallel to series while keeping the coil split for the JB?

Welcome to the forum!

I have to ask a few questions first- do you want the single coil to balance with the JB (does it matter to you)? Are you looking for a true single coil sound or a humbucker sound?

Re: Single coil sized humbucker to pair with JB in bridge

Well I just don't want a huge difference in volume a pickup height adjustment wouldn't remedy. I'm looking for something with a single coil sound without the hum, the duckbucker sounds really nice. Not sure if I should go for it or the vintage rails.. or maybe something else

Both the Duckbucker and Vintage Rails are great Strat-sounding pickups...but there would be a volume difference. I'd look at the Classic Strat Stack, or even the YJM Furies for better balance.

I am leaning towards the duckbucker and YJM. Something just draws me to the duckbucker.. will wiring it in series or any other solution not alleviate any of the issues?

Rami- So many choices, I would imagine the duckbuster would be nice, but I have an alternative that you might want to consider if you can give up a pot, add a pot, or can add an on and off with a trim pot-

I have a JB with a Coolrails on a spin a split- When the cool rail is spun about 50% it cleans up into a very stratish sound, but when the spin is off, it's a rather powerful pup- very warm and easily overdrives.

I added an on and off switch for the spin a split and get the best of both worlds- the cool rail is dialed into the strat position all the time for rhythm and clean leads, but when I hit the bypass, it's a lot like hitting a boost.

Maybe more work than you were looking for, but the circuit is really easy and 'saved my life' hundreds of times when I realized I needed more 'umph on the fly' to cut through the mix.

Well, I have 2 Super Strats HSS with JB humbucker in the bridge, and Hot Rails Neck (the neck position). It works for me.

You can't wire it in series. I think it is permanently in parallel (at least mine is). It happens to be pretty low in output compared to a JB. You may be able to balance them better with pickup height.
