single coil south coil cut

Hi, what's the best way to do a coil cut for the south coil? i know you shut red and white to ground to get the north coil to work only but i also want the neck pickup to use the south coil when i stplit it so together they are humbucking, i've seen things about an inside out wiring where RED is hot, GREEN and BLACK are now together and WHITE ground, so you can shut the GREEN AND BLACK to ground to get single coil and this time it will use the south coil, the wiring is different but it's supposed to be the same, also i've seen it being wiring RED AND WHITE to BLACK with a switch to coil tap, would that work as well? im not sure thanks!!!!!!!!

Re: single coil south coil cut

ok - here's the deal ... i want to help you ... and i believe i can ... but i have no friggin idea what you are trying to do ... you need to type more clearly instead of one crazy ass run on sentence

what exactly are you looking for ?

are we talkin about a H-H guitar? or something else?

what kind of switch? 3-way? 5-way?

are there any mini toggles or push/pulls involved?

tell us exactly what you want out of each switch position and we can get you there

Re: single coil south coil cut

Sorry about that, im writing at work. ok here are the details

i wanna try and simulate the sound of the second position of a strat (5 way switch) to get a twangy sound

alnico ii pro on both neck and bridge
les paul standard, 2 vol, 2 tone, 3way toggle
2 push pull pots

the idea is to mix the SLUG coil of the bridge and the SCREW coil of the neck in parallel to try and get a twang type of sound that my friend's guitar has

to select the slug coil on the bridge pickup i know you wire the switch so red and white go to ground together.

now to select the screw pole on the neck pickup.. what do i do?

if you know of a way to get a twang sound with a 2 humbucker guitar that'd be great, i'll take any advice. in the end i will wire my guitar up and try parallel, out of phase, and anything else i can think of until i get the sound i want but i need to know about the south and north coil cut first, thanks.

Re: single coil south coil cut

ah - much clearer - totally doable

yes, i love that sound - i have wired two of my H-H guitars to be able to get it ... and in fact, on one, i use an AIIP in the neck and it sounds frikkin phenomenal when split and combined that way (with a JB, of all things!)

you can actually do it with one push/pull - bridge pup wires on one side and neck pup wires on the other side ... to select the screw coil on the neck pickup, wire the switch so that red/white go to hot together

Re: single coil south coil cut

cool thanks alot!, i'll post my schematics, i already had it figured out from seeing it on the p-rails wiring but i needed to confirm, im using the other pot to wire the neck and bridge in parallel together, one PP switch will cut the neck coil the other one will cut the bridge coil BUT when both switches are engaged it automatically sets both pickups in parallel basically like the middle position on the toggle, i know it would i might even do the pickups in series but we'll see, thanks!!!!

Re: single coil south coil cut

Choosing the coil to be cut for each humbucker can be done.
To get the "other" coil to be the active one, you have to wire the humbucker "inside-out". This page explains it all:

Re: single coil south coil cut

Red/white to green gets you the north coil (slug) and red/white to black gets you the south (screw) coil. With a simple on/on/on switch in a Les Paul you want to avoid using the red, white or green as hot on one pickup because you run the risk of putting the pickups out of phase or worse when the pickups are in full humbucking mode and on at the same time. With a guitar that has a mega switch you can get away with alternate wirings.

Re: single coil south coil cut

Actually, it is possible to wire a guitar so that the cut coils will be hum cancelling and the pickups will be in phase.

The top diagram shows the way in which a humbucking pickup would be wired for a coil cut switch.
The bottom diagram is wired in a way whereby the other coil will be active during coil cut. If strict attention is paid to the polarity it will be in phase with the other humbucker in coil cut or series mode.
I know this is possible because I've done this with my own guitars plus some companies (Ibanez for one) wires their pickups in this way so that it will be humcancelling when both coil cuts are activated.
