Single Coil Suggestions?

Hi everyone!

I recently put together a FrankenStang. It has a Mustang copy body, bound Jaguar neck, and a Jag trem. I really love it but I'm having some issues with the neck pickup.

I put a hotrails in the bridge. It has just the sound I'm looking for, but the neck pickup hums way too much and sounds really thin and undefined with both pickups turned on. I was hoping to get some suggestions for a replacement. The only real requirements I have are that it needs to hum as little as possible, it needs to blend well with the hotrails, and it needs to fit under the traditional mustang pickup cover. I play all types of music, but if I had to narrow down a sound that I'm trying to get out of this guitar I'd say a mix between Nirvana circa In Utero, Local H, and Soundgarden.

Decide if you want a true single coil or something noiseless. For a true sc I'd recommend the Antiquity Mustang. For noiseless I'd recommend the Cool Rails.

Area 61 if it fits mechanically. I plead ignorance.

The Injector Neck is another. It's too bassy against the Injector Bridge or weaker, but it will work well with a Hot Rails in the bridge.

Any chance that neck pickup is out of phase with the Hot Rails? Who makes the neck pickup?

Decide if you want a true single coil or something noiseless. For a true sc I'd recommend the Antiquity Mustang. For noiseless I'd recommend the Cool Rails.

I am leaning toward a true single coil. Do you think the Antiquity would sound good with the hotrails? I was looking at the Hot Jaguar or Quarter Pound Jaguar too, but I wasn't sure.

It is a Wilkinson Alnico vintage style single coil. I had a luthier cut a bone nut and he double checked my wiring and said that it was just a noisy pickup. I don't mind a little hum, but this one is just annoying. I ordered some copper tape to shield everything and since I'm taking everything apart again I figured I'd upgrade that single coil to something that sounded better with the hotrails.

You were concerned about hum, so I gave suggestions that were noiseless.

If you want a low noise single coil then you're basically left with a Lace Sensor. There are also dummy coil options like Illitch and something like what is used in some EBMM guitars. There are also Zex Coils and other similar options, but they are still multi-coil designs.

I'll defer to the noiseless recommendations, but since you asked, of those 2 the Hot Jaguar could be good. I have the Quarter Pound Strat and it's too dark for my taste.

what pot values are you using?
