single coils for Jackson Dinky HSS

I just ordered a Duncan Distortion for my 90s Jackson Dinky. Im wondering what single coils would be a good match for the middle and neck positions. Im looking for a more traditional single coil tone, Not a stacked humbucker. Im considering the SS1 and SS2.

Re: single coils for Jackson Dinky HSS

Unfortunately, no vintage spec single coils will ever match a DD (or even a `59 for that matter) for output, so if you want to go that route then be prepared for a very noticable jump in output when you switch to the bridge only. The SSL3 comes much closer in output without sacrificing all of the vintage goodness (but unfortunately still kills off some).

That said, there are guys like myself that do this intentionally, so that´s not necessarily a deal breaker depending on what you have planned.

Then there´s also the issue of hum in the 2, 3, 4 and 5 settings. While this is primarily a wiring issue, no true single coil can be fully silenced when selected alone, 3 and 5 will always have hum.

While it´s not what you wanted, I would go with the Classic Stack Plus in your shoes, and wire it for full hum cancelling in all positions. That way it would tonally get you very close to where you seem to want to be (BTW most people can´t tell the Stack plus from an SSL-1 in a direct A / B test), but still be fully humbucking in all positions allowing you to ignore the huge noisefest that single coils and overdrive /distortion inevitably produce.

Thanks for the info.

I will probably only use the single coils on my clean channel so I can always run the volume a bit higher. I also dont see myself using the bridge/middle pickup together but Ive never had a HSS set up before so who knows. I may find some tasty tones there. Im using a JCM900 Dual Reverb head.

Re: single coils for Jackson Dinky HSS

Just out of curiosity: A JCM900 DR with a clean channel? Didn´t those have footswitchable master volumes, instead of truly separate channels? Or am I just getting old?

The dual reverb was the 2 channel head the MKIII had the dual master volumes.

BTW Hai Zerb long time no see.

Ah, that´s right, the 9100 (MKIII) and later SL-X were the single channel ones, you´re absolutely correct, thanks.

And hi.
