Single Coils in my Schecter

Okay I got a Schecter Tempest Extreme for my birthday, and while I love the feel the pickups don't do it for me. I want to replace them with single coils so I can get a sharper tone more suited to my grunge/shoegaze/alternative in general styles. Any recommendations? I was thinking of the Seymour Duncan Jazzmaster pickups.

Re: Single Coils in my Schecter

what comes in that tempest? given the name i'm guessing EMG's

but really i think the right humbuckers with the right wiring could do everything you need

i have a brobucker/jazz set in my tempest custom, and with the coil tap both of them have really nice single coil tones, neck is stratty as hell, bridge is... kinda like a hardtail strat bridge but a little different. I can't comment on how they sound wired in parallel, i don't have a pot for that yet, but that's another way to make humbuckers sound more single coil-ish

just a thought

or p rails. P rails would be an awesome choice as well

Re: Single Coils in my Schecter

You would probably have to get something custom wound to fit jazzmaster pickups in your pickup routes.

Phat cats would probably be pretty cool, and drop right in your guitar.

Re: Single Coils in my Schecter

...If you want single coil tone, I recommend a stag mag, which is much closer in construction to a single coil than a Phat Cat, despite not being one (besides, you can always run it split or in some other crazy wiring). A P90/phat cat really is a different thing from any Fender pickup... You'll get Phender tone, not Fender :D

Plus they sound like a Fender Widerange in full :smokin:

Alternatively, route and throw the JM pups in. Though remember that real JMs use meg pots.

I too was looking to change the pickups in my schecter... what pickup would you suggest for a SRV/Mayer tone?

Re: Single Coils in my Schecter

If you NEED a "strat" tone in a 'bucker slot, look at Rio Grande's Muy Grande in the bridge and Tallboy 'bucker in the neck. Kind of like a Stag Mag set, but done right.

Re: Single Coils in my Schecter

asking curiously... how are the Rio Grande pickups "done right" compared to a Stag Mag?

Re: Single Coils in my Schecter

The bridge has more low end and midrange content; i.e. more "beef". That, and they have a balanced neck and bridge pairing.
