single coils that match jb in hss strat

Re: single coils that match jb in hss strat

Does this guitar have a Floyd? SSL-1s and Floyds aren't the greatest combination IMHO... the resulting sound is anemic and weak. SSL-1s sound great in a hardtail or vintage tremolo type bridge (really any tremolo except a Floyd... even Kahlers allow SSL-1s to reproduce their full sound.

SSL-5 or SSL-3 would be my picks... you could crank down the SSL-3 in the middle so you still get a good middle tone but have better pick access.

Highway one strat alder body, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard and vintage trem

I have tried CustomStack (noiseless and flat version of SLL-5) and YJM Fury in the neck with a full JB in the bridge. I liked both. CustomStack splits + middle gave me a decent quack and is clear and articulated under high gain (I play boss metal core), fury is fatter and I like it more for soloing since I like to play metal but I have not been able to try it split+midle to test the quack (ran into noise issues, disconnected autosplit, that was not the problem but still ned to rewire that).

Both can match the volume output of JB and are not thin.

I forgot to say, my guitar has a floating FloydRose bridge, poplar body, maple neck and rosewood figerboard, just for your reference.

Re: single coils that match jb in hss strat

The best match for a JB in a HSS guitar that I've ever played are the 2 G&L vintage style Alnico V single coils that came stock in my USA Legacy.

Loud, bright, and chimey, with great in-between sounds.. and the middle position mixed with the JB split is right on the money.

If you can find some of those G&L singles for sale anywhere, get them.

You are telling us that G&L pickups are better than Seymour Duncans?

Kinman 62's.
I've got this setup in both my guitars with a JB in the bridge, one of which is a Custom Shop JB.
I run the whole thing with 250k pots and it's perfect.

be sure to match up the magnets. so the JB has A5 magnets, at least get A5 single coils. i'm getting the SSL-1s soon. i can't wait!

don't think he said that. he did say it was the best match for him.

oops. just when I thought that A8 in the bridge and the A4 in the neck has been giving me a great sound.... or the A2 in the bridge and the A5 rods in the neck.... or the A5 in the bridge and the ceramics in the middle and neck... I better go change everything out so the magnets all match. :scratchch

i'm talking from personal experience and i'm pretty particular about tone...not to say you aren't but i can hear a big difference between an A2 single coil and an A5 HB. i also play through nothing but clean channels on my amps.

judging by your avatar you're probably some metal dude who wouldn't mind the tone of a 10W peavey solid state blaring out the sweet chimes of a sears guitar loaded with stock pickups. no offence to metal fans. i love metal. my first CD was kill 'em all.
