Single Coils to match my JB in my Godin SD22

Re: Single Coils to match my JB in my Godin SD22

The SD22 is a very cool guitar.

You want something high output enough so you avoid a large volume drop when you switch to a single coil, but still gives you a quack in positions 2 and 4.

Do you want true single coil or noise canceling?

True single coils are my favorite so I'll recommend one of them. Since you like Alice in Chains and Sabbath, the heaviest true single coil would be the Quarter Pound Strat (or Quarter Pound Jaguar).

I am a big Sabbath fan, too (all eras). I'd think the Quarter Pound would be the right choice, unless you want humcancelling, and then I would recommend the Vintage Hot Stack Plus.

Re: Single Coils to match my JB in my Godin SD22

Honestly I just want the best possible sound to play some Alice and Sabbath. Since I barely know anything about pickups it's pretty hard for me to know what to do. I think I want a single coil that sounds like a humbucker since Alice and Sabbath didn't play with single coils. So basically putting a Vintage Hot Stack Plus in the neck and middle would fit well with my JB? And is humcancelling important? Is that a feature only found in humbuckers?

Thanks

True single coils are my favorite because I play mostly clean and true scs to me have the most tone color. But I think the quarter pounders sound pretty bad ass with distortion too.

To me it seems like single coil sized humbuckers have a more neutral sound than true single coils clean. Their clean tone doesn't seem as exceptional to me as true single coils. But I see how lots of people like them cuz they sound great with distortion. It's subtle but you can hear how they have more of a rock sound distorted. While with the true single coils you can still hear a little of the blueseyness behind the distortion.

Well Tony Iommi used P-90s for a bit, although they were super overwound. Humcancelling can be found in single coils, too...it helps when you use a lot of gain. And yes, the Vintage Hot Stack Plus would balance with your JB and be humcancelling. The Hot Rails can do it too, but it is a darker sound, so EQ-wise, it is very different than the JB, but certainly has enough gain. The main thing is that you listen to clips or videos, and research like crazy. In the end, it is hard to tell what it will sound like in your guitar, with you playing, so we all have to make educated guesses based on experience.

Re: Single Coils to match my JB in my Godin SD22

Thanks guys for all the info. Since I use a lot of distortion I probably need humcancelling, I think I'll just buy myself 2 Vintage Hot Stack Plus pickups to go with my JB! :)

You guys are very very helpful!

Re: Single Coils to match my JB in my Godin SD22

Hi guys, there seems to be two versions of the Vintage Hot Stack Plus. The STK-S7n and the STK-S7. I understand I need the N version for the neck, but what about the middle position? Do I have to buy 2 necks? I know this might seem a stupid question, sorry!

Thanks

Re: Single Coils to match my JB in my Godin SD22

A standard approach would be to use 2 neck versions; however, you are free to use a bridge & a neck (there is no "middle" version of humbuckers.)

2 neck pickups. Good choices, btw.
