Single Coils to match my JB

Re: Single Coils to match my JB

The Woodstocks don't sound vintage, not in the way the Areas or the '54s do. They are a good choice for an 'overwound' sound though, and they actually quack better than most overwound single coils do (and better than any other Kinman save the '54s).

Re: Single Coils to match my JB

Alright, so I've narrowed my choices for the neck pickup to a seymour duncan stk-s6, cool rails, dimarzio chopper, fast track1, area 58 or 61.

Remember, I'll be using 250k pots. My main concern is good cleans.

Well, the Duncan Custom Stack Plus is the only pickup out of that list that is designed to use 250K pots... not that you can't use 250K with the DiMarzios, they just come alive with 500K. I personally don't like any of those DiMarzios with 250K pots, way too dark for me... I like lots of cut & treble though, you might not.

Re: Single Coils to match my JB

Area 58/61 were designed for 250k pots and handle that better than the duncan since they have more presence to start with.

I'd stay away from Chopper and FT1 with 250k pots, they will be too muddy for the neck.

Yikes! I think they're almost too dark with 500K pots. lol! they definitely do have that presence that you speak of... how much more do they have than the Duncan? I've never played a Duncan stack. The 58 is a little smokey for me, does it even have more high mid presence than the Duncan Stacks?

Re: Single Coils to match my JB

Too dark with 500k? Really? Hmm what is your rig, are you using a long run of cable or a lot of effects without a good buffer? I can't imagine them being too dark. If they are too dark, something is wrong and nothing else will help, they are about as bright and have as much presense as any noiseless can, more than just about anything else. The only thing that would be in the ballpark are the Kinman 54s.

If you find the '58 too dark, try the '67, it is brighter still.

Ray, I've tried almost every VV and Area pup in a HSS combination with the JB.

The 67 has almost the same treble detail as the JB but I personally don't like 250k pots with any humbucker. I'm a big fan of the noiseless stacked singles but still love my true single coils. When I say "too smokey" I mean too smokey for me personally.

The term "ice pick highs" has no place in my tone vocabulary since I LOVE cut and an aggressive forward leaning high midrange. Hell, I rarely met a tele bridge pup I didn't jive with.

It's all about picking technique and how one sets up their amp or rig.

I have a blackface Super Reverb and blackface Princeton Reverb.

Those amps are tone monsters, but I usually just use modelers since I am protective of my hearing and those vintage amps will take the paint off of the walls and loosen dental fillings.

I don't like the word "shrill" either.

people are always running away from treble. I run towards it.

There has to be a Duncan stack vs Area demo somewhere out there...

Re: Single Coils to match my JB

I think I'm going to go with the stk-s6. I've heard a lot more success stories with the jb and stk-s6/ssl-5.

Thanks for the helpful info everyone!
