Single Cutaway VS. Double Cutaway

I was looking at this guitar with a fellow player and we really couldn't make up our minds on which is the better guitar. They both have the same specs:

chambered basswood body

maple top

maple neck, rosewood board

filtertron black top pickups.

supposedly the double one is the same with just another cutaway.

which would you choose?

Single cutaway. It will provide more stability and better tone (yes, that extra bit of wood at the top does make a difference).

Re: Single Cutaway VS. Double Cutaway

I'd go for the single cut because I think it looks less ugly. The double cut looks like the fat retarded kid in class. The single cut just looks like the fat ugly kid.

Single cut.

I have a telecaster shaped Charvel that sounded awesome, but I didn't care for the color, so I transplanted everything into a Charvel SoCal body (double cut strat). It sounds horrible, I'll be transplanting everything back soon.

DC. It sure never stopped ol' Mal from getting (IMHO) the best rhythm tone in rock and if you ever really WANT to, those upper frets are sure a bit easier to reach. I love my LPs but man, getting on any kind of DC sure does wonders for my left hand.

singlecut, because it will balance better when you're standing up

I always wondered why he took the other pickups out.

DC for access, SC for tone and stability...

Chambered basswood?! That neck is gonna diiiive on the DC...

Re: Single Cutaway VS. Double Cutaway

What stability are you talking about? Are you serious that you think that there are tuning stability issues on double cut LP's and the like cause they have less area that is glued? Do necks on double cuts really squirm around that much? Thats one of the sillier things ive read on here in awhile

+1. Neither is a beauty, but the single cutaway is by far the better-looking of the two. And yes, single cutaways have a different tone (better) and more stability. Much more anchoring for the neck does make a difference. That's one of the reasons LP's have the tone they do.

Re: Single Cutaway VS. Double Cutaway

Both of them guitars are FUGLY. The single cut less FUGLY, but FUGLY none the less. Thank god they're made of Basswood. That would have been a huge waste of any other.

Re: Single Cutaway VS. Double Cutaway

I use to have a Pro Series PowerJet, single cut. I'd probably still have the guitar if it had been a dual cut. For leads, the upper fret access is just so important to me. At the end of the day, it's a preference thing though.

Re: Single Cutaway VS. Double Cutaway

Of the two Gretsch models in the OP, I would opt for the single cutaway.

Money no object, I would opt for a thinline, semi-solid Gibson.

Re: Single Cutaway VS. Double Cutaway

The finish and Bigsby don't do any favours to the guitar - the black one looks much better.

Anyway single cutaway for the win...

Re: Single Cutaway VS. Double Cutaway

Single cutaway any day of the week. DC Les Pauls are ugly as ****, and I quite frankly can't understand why someone would want them.

Re: Single Cutaway VS. Double Cutaway

DC's do tend to allow easier upperneck access, but for some reason I usually prefer singlecuts for playing.
Don't know why, I just do, but I like DC's too, and own both DC & SC guitars (And no cut as well--my classical & my 12 string)

Of the examples there--I'd go with the SC though, but if you like the DC better--go for it.
