Single pickup guitar. Which pickup will it be?

Re: Single pickup guitar. Which pickup will it be?

I have a Crazy 8, and a black winter, nazgul 6, lace deathbucker, zexcoil convertible for tele, and am currently working on a 1-off el diablo with ceramic mags in a tele. I also have a black winter for tele in a single pickup guitar. I am a huge fan of single pickup guitars. Also have a p-13 in a thinline tele.

I recently made an Eldred-mod Esquire
with an Antiquity Lap Steel pickup

How about a Wilde (Bill Lawrence) L90 6h or 8H or L500l or xl (duncan dimebucker) and a Q filter on the tone control so you can dial the resistance from full on down to almost an acoustic. Actually you can use the Q filter on any pup for that matter. I've seen Metal guys, blues guys and jazz guys using a l500xl. L90 is one of my favorite pickups but it doesn't always fit like a glove and looks funny sometimes.

It's really eye-opening to see all these responses. Some people want the one pickup to be as versatile as possible (P-Rails, etc.), and others just want it to do one thing (Nazgul, other metal maniac pickups).

This thread is also a good reminder for me to try the Parallel Axis pickups. Ugly as sin, but so many of you guys like them.

Part of me wants a Tele just to try a BG1400 Esquire-style. That would probably rule pretty hard.

The Parallel Axis pickups are really quite a thing to experience.

Wow, great answers! EMG 85 is unexpected for me. I can see the 81 in a bridge-only situation (functions sort of like a JB), but you 85 guys - you don't miss top end or cut in the bridge position?

I had the EMG 85 in the bridge spot of single-humbucker Mahogany Charvel-clone that is already a really heavy, fat, thick-sounding guitar and had no problems at all with the 85 being muddy or dark sounding. It was nearly perfect for any kind of distorted rock: zero noise, crazy harmonics, tons of sustain, great lead tone. It had a dull clean sound in this guitar, which was why I didn't stick with it.

I'd go with a Custom: versatile, cleans up well, and can cover just about any base.

My 2 cents. I agree with a couple responses; using the S/D JB SH4, with a three-way micro (wired parallel, Single coil, Series) gives wonderful return, and variety. A phase switch could be added as well. If you're looking to get the most out of the pup, you need to consider adding the switch(es). The Seymour Duncan diagram page great place to start. that's why it's there! "Break a leg"!

The only single pickup guitar I've really jived with was a Airline Bobkat with a single gold rails pickup in the middle position. It just had a really cool vibe going for it that was warm and soft but also glassy and funky/cocked at the same time.

I have a Duncan Designed hb 102. (Duncan designed JB). On a V styled guitar. Works well.uploadfromtaptalk1458385670716.jpg my kid loves it too.

If you ever lusted for an American Kramer, get a JB. Add a push/pull pot for series/parallel switching. Very versatile and rawks hard.

If you want a red one with white and black stripes and spacetape on it, bite the bullet and get an IM1.
