Recto River Dragon: Simply awesome - 'Venice Queen' vibe goin' on real nice there. When the gain comes in, there's too much bass for my like - those drums are killer. How did you do that awesome fade in?

Recto Masterplan No TS: Awesome lick at the end, caught me by surprise.

Recto Masterplan TS: Tighter tone with the TS. I see what you're talking about with the OD in front.

Thanks for the clips Jeffers. :)

Re: Single Recto and Better DFHS clips (Finally)

Just a fade in done in Nuendo, pretty easy and basic actually. I know what you mean about the bass though, need to slap a high pass on there. That, and I need to put some ambience and bleed in the drums, but as is they sound pretty good.

Also, The Masterplan is by Evergrey, River Dragon by Nevermore ;).

<3 "The Masterplan" <3

I watched the last 45 or so seconds of it on their live DVD over and over and over and over and... Simply amazing.

Watching the Live DVD right now ;). It's amazing!

Whats your recording setup mate?

Guitar sounds nice. No bass?

This was Hellraiser into OD808, NS-2, into Recto and Avatar 2x12 with V30's, single SM57, Behringer mixer, Maudio 2496 soundcard.

No bass, need to filter some of that low end off tho :(.

Re: Single Recto and Better DFHS clips (Finally)

The soundcard must be alright coz it sounds really professional. :smokin:

Towards the end of Masterplan there's a shot of the drummer in action that is so beautifully framed and lit that every time I see it I half expect a "1985 - 2005, He Will Be Missed" graphic to appear on screen.

That reminds me... with sampleware like DFHS and Battery and such, I know you can sub mix within the program/plug-in, but then it appears as a single stereo track in your recording/mixing program, right?

So you can still change the levels of the individual drums prior to finalization, but can you change their EQ separately or does it limit you to global tonal adjustments? Like, could you set a different high pass filter for the snare vs the cymbals and tweak the settings as you EQ the guitars etc, or would you have to guesstimate the filter settings and make the changes ahead of time to the samples themselves?

Re: Single Recto and Better DFHS clips (Finally)

You can do it two ways...

The first, which I do, is apply the effects while the VST is running. In Battery, you have to specify everything to go to seperate channels. With DFHS, it automatically gives you a kick, snare bottom/top, individual tom mics, hat mic, overheads, and ambient (room). It let's you treat it like an actual mic'd drum track.

The other way is with DFHS, you can bounce the tracks at the end which just creates a Wav file out of each mic, and then really treat it like a mic'd kit.

Re: Single Recto and Better DFHS clips (Finally)

What are the basic pros/cons of each method? CPU strain, etc...

Re: Single Recto and Better DFHS clips (Finally)

More strain on the PC the first way, but it gives you the flexibility to alter drum parts as you go, which I used to do a ton. I don't really do that anymore with DFHS, so I'm going to start bouncing.

Re: Single Recto and Better DFHS clips (Finally)

River Dragon updated with bouncing used, I keep getting it better sounding each time, but I still don't think it's quite perfect.

Re: Single Recto and Better DFHS clips (Finally)

Nice! I love The River Dragon (the song I mean). But I'd feel you'd need more mids in a band situation. The bass seemed huge, but not overwhelming to me...? Otherwise ****ing tight playing, and I like the drum sounds too.

Re: Single Recto and Better DFHS clips (Finally)

DSS- doesnt your hellraiser sport EMG 707s? And fpeople say EMGs have no tone or kill tone, BS bro...

Gotta get a set for my RG7620.

Re: Single Recto and Better DFHS clips (Finally)

Def sounds like a Recto! Got that low mid "squash"

Loved the clean part on the first clip too...thats where I think EMGS sound best...articulate clean stuff. People say Recto cleans aren't so good..I always thought they sounded pretty good

Great playing as always Jeff!

Re: Single Recto and Better DFHS clips (Finally)

Yea i love that fat mesa crunch.. and its about time lol!! I know ive been hassling you about getting it recorded for a while.

Also, can you give us an idea of the amps eq settings? i think you said the bass was really low?

Re: Single Recto and Better DFHS clips (Finally)

On my Mark III on the Graphic EQ, I keep the middle slider all the way down, the second to left half way down and the second to right slightly down. I dont like how the suggested "V" formation sounds.

Dont know why I posted that, just thought I'd share what I use on me Mesa lol.

Re: Single Recto and Better DFHS clips (Finally)

Sounds like a Recto!!
I liked the 5150 mids more ... but the recto seems to be a way tighter...
nice work!

I don't remember the Masterplan without TS settings, but with it(and this was for that and the Riverdragon), it was pretty much bass and treble at 11:30, mids at 10:30, presencence at 12:30, gain at 12:30. TS was drive at 3.5, level at 5-6, tone knob doesn't make a difference at a high gain setting.

I really, really, really need to learn how to properly mix drums... it sounds too live and muddy, on everything except the kick LOL.

DAMN! Tone is awesome and you're playing is disgustingly tight. :headbang:
