Single volume coil split

Hey,

I want to wire my nazgul/sentinent set for coil spliting. I only have one volume and a 3 way switch. I think I'd like to have inner coils. Does anyone know where to get wiring diagrams for that?

Re: Single volume coil split

Step 1: Flip the magnet in one of the pickups. Hopefully at least one of them has just a single standard bar magnet.

Step 2: Swap black with green on the pickup with the flipped magnet (black connects to bare which connects to ground; green becomes the hot wire and connects to the switch). For the next step, let's refer to this as pickup X and the unaltered pickup as pickup Y.

Step 3: Wire the switch
Run the red/white wire pair from each pickup to each of the center lugs of the push-pull.
Run a wire from the switch where the green wire from pickup X is connected to the lug closest to the pot on the side where the red/white wire pair from pickup X is connected.
Run ground to the lug closest to the pot on the side where the red/white wire pair from pickup Y is connected.

I assume you want to pull the switch for split operation.

Re: Single volume coil split

^ This seems odd. If you had a normal pickup where you wanted both inner (slug) coils split to then you would not have any magnet flipping, and you certainly wouldn't need different colours on hot and ground.
All you would need would be the standard coil split diagram.

So is the Nazgul/Sentient a wholly different setup

Re: Single volume coil split

I see no reason why the Nazgul or Sentient woudn't hold to Duncan convention which is for slug coils to be assigned black and white and oriented North and for screw coils to be assigned red and green and oriented South, regardless of whether they are intended to be placed in the bridge or the neck.

Now if the slug coils are both North, then one coil needs to be changed to South and either one or the other will need to have its wind direction reversed in order for the pair to be hum-cancelling. If the OP doesn't care about hum resulting from the coils having the same wind direction and polarity, then both pairs of red/white connections can simply go to ground per the standard coil split diagram.

Like many others, I like the sound of the inner coils in parallel. Since the combination can be made hum-cancelling with minimal effort, I see no reason in not doing it. It's definitely not an uncommon or unprecedented practice, even if Duncan doesn't have a diagram for it.

Now if there is some reason why one of the screw coils can't be shorted to hot (switching complications?) then the red/white connection on one pickup can be changed to green/black, the white wire can become hot and the red can go to ground. The wire colors of the other pickup would then need to conform to the standard diagram. Again, the direction reversal on the wind of one the slug coils would be incumbent upon a magnet flip.
