Skool me on Les Paul Jr./ Jr Specials

Mine is a 97 . I haven't played it at all very much. Anyone like these? Mine ( a relic refin) is going off for a pro fret Crown and Polish.Basically Green Day and Mountain wrere about the only players of these? Not expecting a whole heck of a lot from this. Going price for used one is 650-750. Not much Gibson for the price, although the Japanese are trying to sell them for a lot there on Ebay.

Re: Skool me on Les Paul Jr./ Jr Specials

Dean Deleo tended toward them. I've always enjoyed playing through that combo. I on occasion ask myself how the hell Gibson sells US-made guitars for such cheap prices relative to others, they even seem to be ~$500 up on Reverb... Are they now just freaking Peavey?

Then occasionally I play one that makes me recall why they're priced that way. I also had a '97 Les Paul for a while, it needed a lot of fretwork to be playable, and not due to wear. It smelled like a real guitar though :) Came close once to buying a Melody Maker single P90 (early 2000s model, with an open-grain finish like an oak cabinet, which is what turned me off.)

Now you sort of have me curious about revisiting that combination.

Re: Skool me on Les Paul Jr./ Jr Specials

I want a P90 Special with a single cutaway. I'm not usually a Les Paul guy but Johnny Thunders, Mick Jones and Johnny 2 Bags are making me want one. I love the bare bones aspect of it.

Re: Skool me on Les Paul Jr./ Jr Specials

I got one of those cheap Epi Les Paul Special I P-90s about a year ago. Plays pretty good (after a bridge replacement... tuners are next), lightweight, and it's just... well... FUN!

I also kind of like it because I'm a "master-volume-master-tone" kinda guy.

Re: Skool me on Les Paul Jr./ Jr Specials

I do known that 2 Bags plays Jr's and not Specials. But I like neck pickups.

Re: Skool me on Les Paul Jr./ Jr Specials

specials and jr's can be great sounding guitars! a buddy plays a '59 jr and it sounds and plays amazing

Re: Skool me on Les Paul Jr./ Jr Specials

My main guitar for 10 years was a Special, a simple and solid guitar.

If that's a DiM DLX in the bridge I'd be surprised if you didn't like it.

I can't tell from the pic is that a Nashville or an ABR bridge? A Nashville will give it a little more chime.

Lovely!

More often than not, "Les" is plenty!

I've got a soft spot for a Doublecut TV Yellow w/a bound neck...
:)

Re: Skool me on Les Paul Jr./ Jr Specials

While I don't play it that often, I love my Special.

Nah, I am throurougly disenchanted with the bridge DLX +. Sounds aweful for mid gain stuff. It was highly touted by some guy on the Dimarzio forum as the best sounding PAf type aftermarket pickup on the planet, but I think like most of Dimarzios, its for gobs of gain. Anyway, I will be supplanting it with a Duncan vintage output bridge P-90.

EDIT- hold the phone
e, I may have the Dimarzio wired out of phase..it's so weak sounding.

Hmm I had one in a basswood guitar I had and it sounded great, wouldn't call it a PAF so much though, It wasn't quite as grainy or wire-y as a P-90 but still had plenty of that personality without the 60 cycle. I did mess with the screws quite a bit to get the sound I wanted.

This was my '90 Special wish I still had it.

My mistake, mine is the old 'Dlx-90, OOP; the 'Dlx+' is the new one, and the P-90 version of the Steves Spcl, totally different animals.

AND YEP..wired outta phase , sounds great now. And wOW- right on with adjusting the pole pieces!!

As this is a OOP pickup, I see littel harm in saying here what this dude had to say about the Dlx - 90;

I wanted something that sounded P-90 ish, not something that emulated a hot humbucker model in P-90 form factor, so I went by what the website said and went virtual P-90 neck and DLX-90 Bridge (note: NOT the DLX plus. DLX-90 is an older model only available by special order now).

Going to do this 2 ways. First, based on what they claim to be, second, based on what they actually are.

First: Are they a noiseless P-90 substitute? How to say this politely.......F*CK NO. Not in any way, shape or form. They sound nothing at all like a P-90 nor like a single coil in any way. They sound like what they are, which is a mini humbucker. If you are looking for real P-90 sound, look elsewhere, these wouldn't fool anyone on any day even if they started drinking before noon. I was pretty surprised and really have no frickin idea what the folks at DiMarzio were thinking marketing this as a noiseless P-90, nor what Steve Blucher, who is probably my favorite pickup designer ever, was thinking when he decided these sounded like P-90s. The thought is just laughable once you hear them.

Second: Now let's ignore the fact that the folks at DiMarzio were high as a kite or tripping balls when they decided these sounded like P-90s or decided to market them that way. Let's pretend they marketed them based on what they actually are.

What these are is mini humbuckers in P-90 form factor. Plain and simple. Just like the Tone zone P-90 is supposed to be a tone zone in P-90 form. If they were marketed as that, and that is what you expected them to be when you bought them, how are they?

The DLX-90 has a very PAF-ish flavor and is honestly one of the best PAF type pickups I've ever heard. It has the articulation and clarity of a PAF, but it does not have that icepick high end that a lot of PAFs have on high notes. Which isn't at all to say it isn't bright and clear, it is. Sound is crunchy, articulate, clear, and at the same time, never thin or overly bright. I really wish this pickup was available in normal humbucker size, I'd buy it. I like it better than either 36th, the virtual PAF, virtual hot PAF, duncan '59, Duncan PG, Duncan Seth, Gibson '57, any of the Gibson burstbuckers, Fralin PAFs, etc. It's right up there with a Lollar Imperial, which I only like in the bridge of strats and not in set neck guitars, so I guess it's better than that.

Virtual P-90 is a fairly dark and boomy neck pickup, not tight and bright enough for my tastes honestly. It reminded me of nothing more than the Duncan '59 neck, with which it shares a whole lot of tonal characteristics. If they had TRIED to make a Duncan '59 neck in P-90 form, they couldn't possibly have come any closer. So keep that in mind, if you like that sound and want it in a P-90 form, here it is.

The above is stated with the pickups wired in series. Eric thought they might be too thin in parallel when I asked him about it before I put them in.

NOT.

Wired in parallel (I have the volumes as push/pull for series/parallel wiring) both pickups resemble strat type single coils, not P-90s, but not at all bad sounding. The DLX-90 has a bit of Tele flavor to it, it isn't obnoxious at all like some bridge singles can be but is definitely single coil sounding like a good overwound strat bridge or Tele bridge. The Virtual P-90 in parellel sounds like a strat pickup in the neck more than it sounds like anything else. I like it better that way honestly than in series.

So what to take away from this?

DiMarzio: First of all, market things for what they actually are. These pickups, especially tne DLX-90 in the bridge, are good PAF style or mini hum sounding pickups in P-90 form factor.

Second of all, given that P-90 equiped guitars are making a huge comeback and a ridiculous amount of them have come out in the last few years, you desperately need a noiseless that ACTUALLY sounds like a P-90. It's time for an Area P-90, not just another mini bucker with a p-90 sized cover.

Re: Skool me on Les Paul Jr./ Jr Specials

here is my special.. I KNOW!! its not an LP..but ya rarely make threads about SG's

she is a 1985 Gibson SG special.. I call her a studio special as there was another model called an SG studio ,that had almost the exact same specs but was only made for 1 year ,1979..This guitar was made from '83-88 and what sets it apart is that she only has 3 pots.. a 2V 1T.. to my knowledge.. only this guitar model as well as the 1979 model previously mentioned where the only SG models to have this configuration.. Possible there was another model of SG that did, but cant think of any off the top of my head

Yea!! she needs some work done.. besides the obvious.. neck needs to be reset and some stress cracks need to be fixed.. Plus, she needs a fret job.. Also, not happy with the EMG's i put in ages ago.. If i ever get around to refurbishing, the 'pups with be changed to something more PAF like.. She used to be my main guitar from '92 to '10 or so..

Re: Skool me on Les Paul Jr./ Jr Specials

Must really be attracted to her..needs so much TLC.

i care little on the cosmetics..besides some of ya pay stupid money for "relics". difference is my relic'ing was honest. The scar on the front was like that when I bought her in 92 or 3.. just not near as pronounced as it is 23 years later. I was planing to cover it up with a pg but other things always seemed to came up..

she is like a bunch of memories.. thats the main but not only reason she is kept.. I havent played her in a year or 2 but EVEN if she played wonderfully and looked awesome.. she might be played a tad more for some songs but she would still not be my main guitar.. that spot is firmly taken by my 2001 dk-2.. even my stagemaster cant knock the dk-2 off its thrown and the stagemaster in some ways actually surpass the dinky

if i ever decide to sink any money in her..I will definitely get a kool paintjob, or perhaps something like claptons "fool" guitar..probably black hardware , and some different pup's

Re: Skool me on Les Paul Jr./ Jr Specials

Here's my '07. It feels and sounds solid for such a lightweight guitar. More resonant (and better balanced) than my SG. Fun to play, brings a smile when I pick it up. Very nice fingertouch though not quite as lively in the neck as my long tenon axes. It'll sing at volume though, just needs to go a bit louder before it lights up. This guitar likes loud.

Was happy to find one with four knobs; I like to play around with the balance in middle position. DiMarzio mini hum was there at the bridge when I bought it. I love P90 neck tone and have other several axes that pair them with a humbucker at the bridge. Eventually I'll get around to replacing the brass nut.

Re: Skool me on Les Paul Jr./ Jr Specials

Would love to own a Les Paul Jr. or Special someday!
Anyone know how to get one original or legit (affordable, but not cheap) copy?

I've been gassing for one of these for a while now, but most of the ones I've been finding for sale are 2015s with the odd neck specs and master volume/tone controls. I prefer the ones with individual volumes and tones.
Oh... another famous LP Special user, Bob Marley.
