Skool me on Les Paul Jr./ Jr Specials

Re: Skool me on Les Paul Jr./ Jr Specials

I love a good Jr or Special. I prefer the original set up of real P90(s) and a wrap around bridge but any flavor will get the job done!

Re: Skool me on Les Paul Jr./ Jr Specials

Would love to own a Les Paul Jr. or Special someday!
Anyone know how to get one original or legit (affordable, but not cheap) copy?

The Epiphone LP Specials are super cheap. Might not even need to replace the pickups- Epi P90s are much better than the stock Epi humbuckers. Master tone & volume on those tho. You can find 4-knob LP Specials from Tokai in the $350-400 range. I haven't played any, but I played a Tokai LP Standard that was really nice. Even real Gibsons aren't too pricey; I paid $750 for my '07 last year. The newer ones only have two controls, but if you look around you can still find the 4-knob version at a reasonable price.

For what's described as a simple "Student Model Guitar" you can get a lot of great Gibby tones out of em & at the very least they'll get you using you're tone knobs!!! I had a 83 Dogear Jr for several years & it was everything I needed & plenty more until it was stolen. Now that I have the Double Cut P-90 Special I definitely appreciate the neck pickup but I never really missed it when I didn't have one....

As for my H/H Special, it's everything I want from a L.P. & nothing I don't. It's rich, warm, powerful, and fairly light. If the house catches on fire the first two things I'm grabbing on the way out are my kid & this guitar!!!

Re: Skool me on Les Paul Jr./ Jr Specials

Thanks guys, but i have decided these guitars are really really poor mans regular Maple Cap Les Pauls. I'm gonna ditch mine, hoping one day I'll get a real 2X P-90Maple Cap Les Paul. Not that they( Junior/Jr. Specials) sound bad, but when I put it up against a reaL 2x P90 Les Paul, well, lets just say it wasn't even in the same league.

Hamer?!?!?!?!?!

:headbang:

No Way. 2 x P-90 Gibson Les Paul all the way! Could never ever afford one , but it's on the Bucket List. Plus I'd want Seymoure Duncan pickups in there so theres that too.

Ya know guys, its a funny expereience ..you are playing the bejeebus outta a guitar getting really really good sound and tone..you think you are on top of the world ma..but then someone plugs in another guitar ( in this case the real 2xP-90 Les Paul) and it's juts ap[parent right away that the guitar you thought sounded so darn good, well, it sucked compared to the higher end model.
Not really humbling..more like humilliating.

Ah, come on! I've played some Juniors and my main guitar for years was an SG Special. They do not suck. I would argue the LP doesn't sound "better" it sounds "different" and you happen to like that difference. Some (like me) prefer the all-mahogany sound. Different strokes, hence different models. Life would be boring if we all played the same exact guitar...

Just to make one thing clear, "suck" was the wrong choice of words..definitely does not suck...'blows' maybe, but not suck. haha, nothing I could say could ever disparage the sound of Mountain and Mississippi Queen!
I think it actually may be "different" as Dave-o said, but the real Paul sure sounded "better" to me.

If it is "different", how so? More hollow , like a Tele or something?

anyway, THIS is the one I want, and nothing else will do;

You want a skinny bodied, funky nut wearing, wide board, robot tuner-ed Deluxe......Yugo Girl lol

Re: Skool me on Les Paul Jr./ Jr Specials

Here's my '07. It feels and sounds solid for such a lightweight guitar. More resonant (and better balanced) than my SG. Fun to play, brings a smile when I pick it up. Very nice fingertouch though not quite as lively in the neck as my long tenon axes. It'll sing at volume though, just needs to go a bit louder before it lights up. This guitar likes loud.

Was happy to find one with four knobs; I like to play around with the balance in middle position. DiMarzio mini hum was there at the bridge when I bought it. I love P90 neck tone and have other several axes that pair them with a humbucker at the bridge. Eventually I'll get around to replacing the brass nut.

PS: HOW do you guys keep the uploader from rotating all the photos sideways? Does it to me every time.

.

I have a Titanium replacement nut that you can have if you want? They stabilize the tuning 10 fold & where the brass gives the open strings a bit of a mid bump Titanium just sounds like steel but louder....

Re: Skool me on Les Paul Jr./ Jr Specials

If it wasn't for the funky neck width on those Less' I'd be down, I actually like the thinner body

So much hate for the 2015's.... I have two of the things & I couldn't be happier with them! Yeah there's some things that need to be done to get them great but it's all easy and cheap stuff? Replace the brass nut with a free Titanium Z.F.N. from Gibson, trade in or sell the G-force for some Grover's, & you've got a great guitar that can be had reasonably cheap. As for the wider fretboard, they are strange at first & they take some getting used to but once you do they're a lot of fun!!!

Re: Skool me on Les Paul Jr./ Jr Specials

I've no hate for them I was busting his chops because I knew that wasn't what he really wanted
