Slab Board or Round Lam?

Re: Slab Board or Round Lam?

Yeah the other thread about Rosewood vs Maple kinda stole my thunder so i`d thought i`d do the slab vs lam for all the Rosewood fans!

Round lam?

In late 1962, Fender changed the way that they fitted rosewood fingerboards onto maple necks. Flat mating faces were stopped. Instead, the top face of the maple was shaped to the same radius as the fingerboard. I think that it was supposed to combat differential shrinkage between the two wood varieties.

Judging by the chunk of money that I spent this morning, I appear to prefer the slab method.

I see. So, how would you tell the difference? Without looking, I mean.

Re: Slab Board or Round Lam?

Unless you can feel the 12th fret position marker inlays AND judge how far apart they are, your fingertips would notice no difference whatsoever.

Re: Slab Board or Round Lam?

i dont think they feel different but i think they sound different.

more rw with the slab and the glue joint is closer to the fretting surface with the lam so i feel there is a harder attack

Re: Slab Board or Round Lam?

I've always liked the laminated board for no particular reason. Most likely the slab board has all the technical reasons to be better, but for some reason i just like the thin laminate.

Re: Slab Board or Round Lam?

i think it sounds more like a maple or ebony board than the slab. i dont know if thats better or not but if you like the look of rw but more snap then lam is the way to go

Re: Slab Board or Round Lam?

A thick slab board (pre-1963 spec) can be a tonal Godsend for really bright Strats and can even help the neck be more stable since rosewood is stiffer than maple.

Re: Slab Board or Round Lam?

i own 2 guitars with a Round-Lam rosewood board... one is a Fender Custom Shop 66 Reissue strat... and the other is a 89 Fernandes super strat... the 66 reissue i can see them going to the trouble and extra work of doing a reissue correctly... but the Fernandes shocked me... it has a 24 fret neck with a thin round-lam board, a head crasher floyd copy... best guitar i bought for $99 yet from a pawn shop... LOL

i was kind of interested in Round-Lam construction after i read about it in a Fender book... a slab board to my way of thinking is more repair and refret friendly...

my question is when did Fender stop Round Lam? 68? 69?

A. R. Duchossoir book says that Fender stuck with the thin round lam until the end of the CBS era.

I have never seen a slab join on a CBS-era Fender. The feature only returned in 1983, when Fender USA began building the first Vintage Re-Issue models. Duchossoir states that Fender chose the '62 designation to give themselves the option to use either construction method without needing to change the product name.

Good info!

oh ok... i never noticed that 70's strats had round-lam boards at all...

Re: Slab Board or Round Lam?

i read one article years ago that made a statement that round lam types added strength to the necks because of the curved glue joint...

Thought it was the other way around because Rosewood is stiffer/harder then Maple? But i`m probably wrong! *lol*

Janka scale:

Rosewood 1780
Maple 1450

when it came to the glue joint itself the article i read was claiming the round-lam with it's curved glue joint was stiffer then a slab boards flat glue joint... but ya i'm sure the thicker rosewood on a slab boad has to be a bonus!
