Slapping and Popping!

What bass is best for playing slap and pop and riff based lines at the same time? Not for me, I'm a finger player maybe a pick occasionally. I'm looking for opinions for a friend of mine.

Re: Slapping and Popping!

The Jazz has that crispy top end (think Marcus Miller). Music Mans are good also.

Of couse, I have a slight bias toward one model...

Re: Slapping and Popping!

I tend to slap and pop my p bass but it really doesnt feel like the best instrument for that.

Re: Slapping and Popping!

I hate you Reggie.........but I love your bass...lol!
I wish mine was in this good a shape... this pic was a net grab. The finish on mine is kind of torn up, since it was abused before I got it.

I love this thing, but I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Parts are history, and any circuit mods or fabrication (had to rig a superstrat switch for the coil taps) evaporate the "vintage" value.

Jazz Bass

Watch this video where Larry Graham just crushes his modified Jazz. :headbang: @ 2:25

BTW, Larry knows that the bass is indeed a guitar.:)

Wouldn't it have more to do with set-up and playing technique rather than model? It seems there's quite a few bass players who slap&pop quite well and play a variety of bass guitar types/brands/models.

Re: Slapping and Popping!

Passive? The Fender Jazz Bass.
Active? Anything with a decent EQ stage should be able to get that sound.

Judging by the ruts in its fingerboard, my fretless Fender Precision Bass can be slapped too.

Earlier in this thread, Reggie (ginormous) name checked Marcus Miller. Miller's Fender bass has been extensively modified by Sadowsky with new pickups and two band active EQ. IMO, Miller gets the best of both world's. FJB and active. Samples of this bass guitar form the basis of the Spectrasonics sample library, Bass Legends. This sample library, in turn, went on to provide the default Slap Bass preset in many Roland digital synthesizers.

Re: Slapping and Popping!

I play a little slap pop...not much becasue the style doesn't really appeal to me but a little becasue I had to when I was whoring myself out as a bass player!

I have been able to slap on just about any bass out there...basses with a very tight string spacing were harder to slap on than other, a Hofner Beatle bass for example was hard and basses with arched tops can be hard but past that almost anything will work.

That said, a good old J-Bass will get the job done right...in the Fender world I actually prefer P-Basses myself, non split pickups versions are my fav followed by the split pickup versions but the tone of a J-Bass is a little thinner and lends itself well for the types of tones most guys want to hear when they slap...

Re: Slapping and Popping!

The Bass that slapped and popped better than any bass I've ever heard was this Gibson RD all maple 34 scale bass. It really shut down a jazz bass in the funk sound.
Unfortunately it was an ergonomic nightmare/ disaster, but I wish'ed I still had that bass.
,maybe I'll grt another one one day. It was hella fun to play- but just for slapping/ popping. ...very one dimensional ( unlike the Jazz which slaps and pops great and delivers some great sweet and thick tone) but oh man ,that one dimension on that Gibson was incredible!!

Re: Slapping and Popping!

My Ibanez SR700 Soundgear is pretty good for the old slap n tickle.
Very versatile bass without completly breaking the bank but the super thing necks are not for everyone.

Re: Slapping and Popping!

I think TGWIF has it right: you can do it on any bass, a wide spacing at the bridge makes it easiest (nut width matters less) and a Jazz Bass is the sound most people think of when they think of slapping.

The best description I ever heard of J vs P slapping was that the J sounds like a razor, while the P sounds like a serrated steak knife. There are nice things about both, though I come down on the opposite side from TGWIF; if I've gotta slap, I've always had a easier time making a J sit in the mix.

Re: Slapping and Popping!

I'm not a bass player, but I own one of the Peavey Grinds TheLivingDead posted about and I just added the STC-3P harness with the 18v mod and so far it's most awesome.

I mention it because it's got the adjustable pull "slap switch" and even with the crappy Peavey pickups the changes were noticeably better/effective.

If he doesn't want to buy an entirely new bass, he might want to look into it.
