Well a while back in December I had entered a contest here on the SD site. Sometime in December I received an Email from RJ Querfurth telling me that I was the grand prize winner of pickups of my choice & the Deja Vu delay pedal.....Cool!
Well it took a little time but I put the pickups in Friday night along with some other cosmetic upgrades. I elected to go with the Slash Alnico II pickups as I have always preferred the warmth of the AII magnets. The Slash pickups just seem to be a touch hotter then the standard AII.
The Les Paul Standard on the right is the guitar that got the pickups.
and after installing the new pickups. I changed the pickup rings to black, removed the pick guard & installed a black tip switch. There is just something very sexy about an all black guitar!
Now in the shop where I installed them we had a small Peavy Transistor amp so it was hard to tell, but when I got it home I was able to plug it into my amps and get a good feel for how they sounded. I am not completely sure what pickups were in it before the swap. I was expecting a 490R & 498T but there were patent numbers on the pickups and no other marking that I could see. I did remove the whole pickup ring and covers and left it all intact??
Anyway when I got home I was able to play it through my amps and what a joy it was to play this guitar. The tone was warm yet it had a very nice attack..... crisp. If I rolled the tone back a bit it warmed up very nicely in the clean setting. With some drive it was rocking quite nicely. Plenty of complexity to the tone and all notes were well defined. The neck pickup offered a really nice warm tone in both clean and OD settings, yet as I mentioned all notes were defined quite nicely. Everything was there that you would want. The bridge Pickup was bright and powerful. Very detailed in both clean setting as well as driven hard. I was able to get some real beautiful feedback in this setting and could pull just tons of sustain out of both pickups.
The following day I brought the guitar to my friends shop & was playing it through A Carvin X amp. Same thing here. Rolling back the volume on the OD channel it cleaned up really nicely & with full volume it was ballsy but with plenty of details. Great pickups. The Les Paul format for these I feel was the right choice!!
THANK YOU SEYMOUR DUNCAN & RJ QUERFURTH!! Great Prize & I Absolutely love the pickups!
