Slash Alnico II... A review

Well a while back in December I had entered a contest here on the SD site. Sometime in December I received an Email from RJ Querfurth telling me that I was the grand prize winner of pickups of my choice & the Deja Vu delay pedal.....Cool!

Well it took a little time but I put the pickups in Friday night along with some other cosmetic upgrades. I elected to go with the Slash Alnico II pickups as I have always preferred the warmth of the AII magnets. The Slash pickups just seem to be a touch hotter then the standard AII.

The Les Paul Standard on the right is the guitar that got the pickups.

and after installing the new pickups. I changed the pickup rings to black, removed the pick guard & installed a black tip switch. There is just something very sexy about an all black guitar!

Now in the shop where I installed them we had a small Peavy Transistor amp so it was hard to tell, but when I got it home I was able to plug it into my amps and get a good feel for how they sounded. I am not completely sure what pickups were in it before the swap. I was expecting a 490R & 498T but there were patent numbers on the pickups and no other marking that I could see. I did remove the whole pickup ring and covers and left it all intact??

Anyway when I got home I was able to play it through my amps and what a joy it was to play this guitar. The tone was warm yet it had a very nice attack..... crisp. If I rolled the tone back a bit it warmed up very nicely in the clean setting. With some drive it was rocking quite nicely. Plenty of complexity to the tone and all notes were well defined. The neck pickup offered a really nice warm tone in both clean and OD settings, yet as I mentioned all notes were defined quite nicely. Everything was there that you would want. The bridge Pickup was bright and powerful. Very detailed in both clean setting as well as driven hard. I was able to get some real beautiful feedback in this setting and could pull just tons of sustain out of both pickups.

The following day I brought the guitar to my friends shop & was playing it through A Carvin X amp. Same thing here. Rolling back the volume on the OD channel it cleaned up really nicely & with full volume it was ballsy but with plenty of details. Great pickups. The Les Paul format for these I feel was the right choice!!

THANK YOU SEYMOUR DUNCAN & RJ QUERFURTH!! Great Prize & I Absolutely love the pickups!

sounds like these ended up in the right hands.

i really need to stop buying pickups, but i want some of these before i do heh heh

Re: Slash Alnico II... A review

The more I play it the more I am lovin' them. It makes me feel like a Les Paul is a great guitar again!

Re: Slash Alnico II... A review

I have them in my Les Paul too, and after dozens of pickup sets over the years, the Slash Alnico II's sound like they bring the true tone of the Les Paul out. The neck stays clear, doesn't get muddy. The bridge cuts through. Both blend with the Les Paul tone, rather than sounding like a JB in a Les Paul, EMG in a Les Paul, etc.., they just seem natural.

I'm thinking of putting a set in my Korina PRS, though the stock Mira pickups are quite good.

Comparing a Korina PRS (the KL1812) with Mira pickups, and Les Paul with Slash Alnico 2's, the Les Paul has a slightly thicker, sweeter tone, but both guitars sound very similar.

Re: Slash Alnico II... A review

I hadn't planned on changing these. the Les Paul sounded really quite good. But now it sounds a whole lot better. as I said earlier i am not sure what was in the LP. They have patent numbers on the back of the pickup, other then that they are unmarked.

What do you think the bridge pickup would sound like in the neck slot on a 24 fret guitar? Spec wise it looks about perfect for what I want, but without being able to hear one. I'm going for a sludgy sound, but will it be TOO dark you think?

It depends on what guitar you are putting it in! These pickups are perfect for a Les Paul & I highly recommend them. But I am also a blues blues/rock kind of player. a 24 fret guitar is just not my thing so I can't really say, but if it is made of Mahogany and has a maple cap.... well I think it would work!

Re: Slash Alnico II... A review

Congrats and thanks for the review!! Im really tempted to get some. I just wish they came in 4 conductor...

BTW, LOVE the sykes treatment on the paul! (chrome rings etc) one of my fav looks. could add a mirror pg...

Re: Slash Alnico II... A review

WOW! That guitar is sexy! I've been on an LP kick lately and swore I wouldn't get a solid black LP, but man that thing looks good! Really makes the binding stand out.

I've been curious about the Slash sig pickups. I've been back on forth on what I want to put in an LP when I get it. Do you think they would work well with a pearly gates bridge or Brobucker?

Re: Slash Alnico II... A review

I've also been interested in trying them out. But then, I see your beautiful Komet 60, and forget about everything else.

Last year, I was writing the most painful check I ever write.....money to the IRS, so they can flush it down the deficit toilet, and the very same day I saw a black/red Komet 60 for $2400......I literally almost puked. lol

Re: Slash Alnico II... A review

Thanks for your review, OP. Slash is my favorite artist but, I would never attempt to use his gear. :D

I don't play at all like him & my tone/sound is really quite different. He is a true great player. his sound is unique, but it really is in his hands not in his guitars:27:

Not sure of the dc on the brobucker or Pearly gates. Check the site. Would I would recommend is don't change anything until you have had the guitar for a few months. Then try to correct what you don't like about the tone. That is the way I approach a pickup swap. If the tone is brittle then I look to warm it up, if the tone is too dark then I try to add some bite to it. It takes a lot of thought and a lot of listening to your own playing as well as sound bites of the pickups. Overall these pickups in a Les Paul are a great way to go!

That's an older picture. I have since added a Marshall 1960AX with greenbacks. Those speakers are absolutely the right choice for the Komet. $2400 is a good price. You should have bought it. :headbang:

In my last studio, I tried to AIIps and wasnt pleased with the bridge one so I pulled it and ran a Suhr Aldrich with an AIIp in the neck.. The neck sounded great with the other pup..

Re: Slash Alnico II... A review

Can these things do hard/heavy rock? Im not going to play death metal, but Id be interested if they could do a little heavy

Since I'd consider Appetite for Destruction one of the greatest hard/heavy rock albums ever made, I'd definately say yes. Just make sure the pickups are adjusted to the right height.
