I want to upgrade the pups on my schecter and i want a slash sound ( bluesy with good distortion). i heard he uses the aph-1. is that a good pickup? what combo does he normally use.

Re: slash sound

He uses the aph-1 and he also has a custom slash pickup thats supposed to be much like the aph-1. U most realize though that most of slashes tone comes from his amp

Re: slash sound

The APH-1 Alnico 2 Pro is a good choice for the neck position. You can use a set of them, but I like to use separate pickups in the neck and bridge. A '59 in the bridge might work well.

yes i know that. i want my tone too sound decent when im playing his stuff. it would be pointless to try and get his tone.
so what about a pearly gates/ aph-1 combo? i want it for classic rock/ bluesy sounding rock.

I think that combo would sound awesome and match well together and for those music styles.

Slash uses APH-1 and Slash CS pups...the Slash pups are handwound APH-1's...If you want a more vintage thing go with a pair of APH-1's...when I say vintage I mean so that the bridge is not much hotter that the neck...if you do want a hotter bridge the CC is a good choice, I also love the PG's ( in fact the PGn is my favorite neck bucker)...a PGn with a CC bridge is also a good set up, as is the APH-1 in the neck and a PG in the bridge or just a simple set of PG's...but the APH-1 is a lot smoother that the PG, you could also look into Seth Lovers...good luck...I hope that all made sense.

Re: slash sound

could i put a aph-1 in the neck of my les paul with my jb. do those work good together? in my other guitar i'll probably go with a cc with a pg ( or something from dimarzio like a tone zone/ air norton combo) .

thanks for all the help guys

Re: slash sound

You wont get the slash sound if you do not have a 24.75 inch scale. Also, the aph set will get you really close to the sounds of slash, though he uses a custom shop set of them and he also uses Gibson burstbuckers here lately. You also need a really good Marshall. Slash uses the tone knob alot also.

Re: slash sound

I've got a copy of the GW Legends with slash and he says he uses PAFs or A2P's. CS scatter wound of course...I mean thin about it can Seymour say no to Slash?? In good conscience.

With mine (A2P) in the bridge and my booster pedal I can get some GNR reminiscent tones. Not dead on of course b/c it's not a Marshall.

Re: slash sound

I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but Slash does not use Custom Shop pickups. He uses regular, off-the-shelf APHs. Seymour and MJ may have designed a version for Slash and sent them to him to check out, but that's not what he's using at this point.

By the way, I just talked to Adam Day, Slash's tech, the day before yesterday while Velvet Revolver and I were both at the Hard Rock Cafe Casino in Las Vegas. The band is doing well -- and hopefully, I'll meet up with them again next month in Sydney.

Sorry if anyone got the wrong impression about what pickups Slash is using. Just to reiterate, they are stock APH pickups. Not custom shop.

"MJ" is short for "Maricela Juarez." She's a 20+ year employee, Seymour's personal assistant, and she manages the custom shop. Also, she's the only one in the building, besides Seymour, who knows all the "secret sauce" things they do to make Antiquity pickups look and sound the way they do.

Oh, and she's probably wound more pickups that have been heard on more gold and platinum albums than anyone else on this or any other planet in our solar system...

Re: slash sound

Cool information about the off-the-shelf APH's - you know, if they're good enough for Slash....... ;)

A bit more on the Marshall, as it doesn't seem to have been mentioned in this thread. Slash's signature Marshalls are a re-badged reissue of the Silver Jubilee 2555 model. Jubilees have a distinctive tone and contribute a lot to Slash's sound.

But Davey hit the nail on the head..... the secret's in the fingers! :approve:

Re: slash sound

I just had a chat with Seymour about the Slash pickups and he has, in fact, wound pickups for Slash in the past. However, the big difference between what he's wound for Slash and off-the-shelf pickups is that the Custom Shop versions have single conductor cable. Otherwise, the magnet and winding spec are basically the same -- however, his winding machine is slightly different from the ones on the Production Floor.

Suffice to say, if you want Slash's sound, you can get it with off-the-shelf APHs. If you want single conductor cable, you can order your APHs that way from your dealer. However, if you want Seymour's DNA on your pickup, you're going to have to order it from the Custom Shop (and pay custom shop prices).

Re: slash sound

I've got to go with a few other posts above: You're gonna be dissapointed.
#1 Wrong guitar (scale, material, weight, shape, etc )
#2 Need the amp (and someplace to turn it up!), although modeling might help
#3 Pickups

I have a 79 Paul, with a stock neck pup, a Boss multi-effects, through a Peavey Studio Pro, and nail the sound. But 90% of it is having the effects, knobs, settings right. A2's in my Kramer aren't going to get tht vibe. But the ceramics in the Paul are decent. If you can come close, pup's will get the last 10%. If not - they won't make that much difference - but the axe might sound cool anyway!
