Slash's 18v wah wah

Re: Slash's 18v wah wah

Maybe it's for powering the distortion circuit while the wah effect is on, so they can be on simultaneously.

Re: Slash's 18v wah wah

I always thought it was for headroom. Fulltone does that with a lot of their pedals, make them compatible with 18 volt adapters for more headroom.

Something like this rings more true to me than the above posters. A single 9V will run a Wah + dist. circuit without a problem. (Snarling Dog Wahs do it on a single 9V.)

Re: Slash's 18v wah wah

I can't imagine it would be for powering two effects. Every other wah/fuzz can be on simultaneously while only having a single battery.

Not to mention all those wah/fuzz thingies we got slammed with back in the day. The first "multi-FX"

Re: Slash's 18v wah wah

Two 9V batteries for 2 different effects COULD be useful. It would eliminate any ground loops due to power supplies.

With that being said, the 18V in the slash wah IS for headroom. I've seen one of the schematics before.

Re: Slash's 18v wah wah

Yeah, I just can't imagine there ever being a "headroom" issue with wahs before, so I'd be very surprised if it really needed 18v. I've noticed a clearer, punchier signal with overdrives with 18v (well, the Pro Analog Dual Drive I used to own that used to support it), but wahs are beyond my comprehension.

If one is to really power two independent effects, it would make sense to power them with separate power supplies. When has Dunlop ever used 18v supplies for their wahs? I used to own a 535Q wah and that was 9v, please enlighten me :)

Re: Slash's 18v wah wah

Hmmm....anyone know if you can power a regular Dunlop wah with 18v? Or would something burn?

When has anyone every used 18v supplies to power multi-effect pedals? All the fuzz-wahs and octave fuzzes run off 9v. In a guitar with EMG pickups, or active accessories, only one 9v battery is required, no matter how many pickups/accessories.

Re: Slash's 18v wah wah

Headroom is a very common issue with wahs. Lets take an example everyone should know, Cream's, White Room. The distortion you hear isnt just the distortion from his Marshalls, it's got some fuzz characteristics in it too, thats from the wah. The inductors in them have to do with headroom. Yellow = less headroom, red = more headroom. Vintage crybabies, and especially Vox wahs add some fuzz to your tone.

Re: Slash's 18v wah wah

I don't care about the details. I just think it looks cool as hell in candy red, and the features make it pretty attractive. I might get one new/used eventually, just because.....well, just because. LOL

Re: Slash's 18v wah wah

Actually, folks DO sometimes run their overdrives at 18 volts for more headroom. One of the TS808 clones is stock like that too. Some people run EMGs at 18 volts as well. In certain effects (modulation), the effect itself becomes MUCH more apparent and in your face; really cool.

With wahs it basically makes them more aggressive sounding/feeling. My original 18v 535Q has never left my board ever since before they came out and I received mine :)
