Slash's Appetite for Destruction Guitar visits Seymour Duncan

We recently had Slash's legendary Les Paul visit the Seymour Duncan Factory for some tonal adjustments. Over time, the pickups had become microphonic and were squealing a bit. Seymour gave the pickups his magic touch and took care of the problem.

When he got the original pickup back in his Derrig LP, this is what Slash had to say:

And to top it off, the recent "reproduction" by the Big "G" is a knock off of the knock off.

Still, that guitar is pretty amazing.

Seriously, Im surprised Slash still plays it instead of just leaving it in a vault somewhere, it must be worth a FORTUNE.

On another note, why did he ever use that Derrig instead of a real Gibson? Its clearly a nice piece, cant have cost much less than a used Gibson, so, if he wanted a Gibson why didnt he just get one? Ive read his book but I dont remember this being addressed.

He was thinking of retiring it when the bridge pickup went microphonic. But I asked him to give us a chance to try and get that guitar up and running again. Fortunately he trusted us enough to let us have a go at it.

On another note, why did he ever use that Derrig instead of a real Gibson?

He got that guitar in the mid-'80s, long before Gibson was doing any historic reissues. This was closer to what nowadays would be called an "R9" than anything else that was available at that time.

I think its great he plays that guitar still, I just think....wow...it must be worth so much (I suppose he has enough cash, but even still...that thing is priceless!)

Even an R9 is far from what Derring and Max were building. The replicas that Slash has are as close to a real '59 (aged Mahogany, hide glue, Brazilian Rosewood, etc.) than anything Gibson has put pout as a reissue.

Anytime a Max pops up for sale (rarely), they bring well over $25k.

And the Derrig was a gift from their manager at the time, IIRC (it's in his book). He was playing a BC Rich Mockingbird mainly until he got the Derrig, which was after they were signed but before Appetite was done.

I always assumed he couldnt afford a real Gibby so got a cheap knock off hahaha, clearly NOT the case.
