hi, i was wondering what some important factors are on slash's lead guitar tone? i know about the les paul and marshall, and using the neck pickup. but also like his eq pedal, his amp settings, what does he do to get such a sweet smooth tone like on the guns n roses live era cd? thenovember rain solo's sound killer and so does the dont cry solo. thanx.

Re: slash's lead tone

From playing alot of Slashes stuff, I can tell you that you have to use the tone controls to get that smoothness. Alot of the lead stuff I nail better if I use the bridge pickup with the tone turned down as opposed to the neck pickup. It all depends what tunes though. Become good friends with the tone knob and you will get it.

Re: slash's lead tone

I had a 94 Les Paul Studio, with aftermarket EMG pickups in it, a tube screamer, E.Q. flat on my amp, all tone knobs wide open on my guitar. Amp pre-amp at 9, tube screamer tone at 50%, drive at 50%...

It sounded so much like Slash that I had to get different pickups put in, because my band mates were ridiculing me.

I doubt that is how Slash gets his tone, but that is one way to do it.

And I know the Les Pauls he appears to be playing ARE NOT Les Pauls. They are custom built by some luthier, who plasters Gibson logos on them.

Re: slash's lead tone

A few basics...

-Slash himself admits to being somewhat of a tone snob, mainly when it comes to guitars. He goes through many to just one one or two that fit his needs/wants.
-Duncan Alnico II Pros-The ones MJ in the custom shop makes ;)

Those two factors will are pretty important. Having a guitar with a nice resonate acoustic tone and pickups that will let the true voicing shine through when plugged in.

-Slash Jubilee heads-Slash suggests the following settings:
"For distorted sounds: Presence: 8, Bass: 7, Mid: 7, Treble: 4 1/2, Output Master: 10, Input Gain: 6 1/2"

"For the clean sounds Slash replaces the EL-34 power tubes with KT88 tubes: Presence: 0, Bass: 9, Mid: 3, Treble: 5 1/2, Output Master: 10, Lead Master: 0, Input Gain: 4. "

Volume is also an important factor to consider when plugged in. Slash plays EXTREMELY loud and a lot of his tone/control over things like sustain/feedback comes from this.

-Tone controls-As mentioned above, get to really know your tone controls and even consider upgrading your pots/capacitors. This really helps to get that creamy smooth sound.

-EQ PEdal-Slash usually uses an EQ pedal only during solos as a mid boost.

Re: slash's lead tone

the APH-1 pickup helps. The first time i played my guitar with one i could instantly recognize that sweet compressed sound you hear in those solo's.
But yea the Marshall and the fingers help, lol
