Slick Strat knocked me out..

One of my students picked up a slick sl57, reliced Strat and I was prepared to hate it. I've actually had fantastic experience with GFS with pickups, but in my biased mind, guitars are far more complex.

The thing is an absolute brute.. probably 9 lb and extremely solid and the tone was extremely good.
Definitely alnico, slightly overwound, and with the heavy body, notes could really sing and sustain out. It's not the chimey side of a strat sound...Much fatter and thicker... But not muddy either.

Intonation is great, it's got a hefty graphite nut and the headstock is tilt back so no string trees.

Frets felt good but my only complaint is fret edges were a bit pokey..

So my brain is pretty fried.. this is a $250 guitar that is better than many American strats I have played... Maybe he just got lucky and he has to deal with an extremely dumb looking logo, but otherwise, I would have killed for this guitar when I was 15 or maybe 30 :-)

Bottom line, today's kids are spoiled.. this is much, much better than a first electric is supposed to be :-)

^^ Truth, and when a guitar plays/sounds good, a newb is more likely to persevere.

Have heard positive things about the Slicks. Certainly, there's not many guitars of that style in the price bracket which come with alnico pups, ash body and a full size trem block.

Kinda dig the single hum superstrat and semi-hollow Jazzmaster with P90/Tele bridge they're offering atm.

Yes I could have avoided that jazzmaster in the past.. but now I have to do everything possible to fight GAS;)

All right buddy, now you've done and done it.. here's a review on that jazzmaster with a p90 and a tele and boy does it grab my imagination.. it sounds like it's built and feels like my students Strat which would mean I would like the way it feels.

What really surprises me is it has an over wound telecaster bridge which is surprisingly bright for an 9.5.. and the neck p90 is 8K but it comes off as rather dark and quiet in this video.

Of course pups are a personal thing and it's fun to swap p90s... but for the price, now I'm really fighting myself to not get another guitar :-)

^^ Cool. That's pretty sweet actually; barn door vibe works well.

Well, it's sufficiently different from many other things out there to warrant a place in the stable ;). I agree, the P90 is a tad dark, but that's easy enough to fix.

Right now is the golden age of quality budget priced guitars and basses.

That is SOOO true!

A couple weeks ago I couldn't resist buying an Iyv thin jazz box. I certainly didn't need it...I've got over 50 guitars already and I make custom guitars in the $2500 - $4000 price range. Turns out that this guitar looks gorgeous, plays amazing, sounds pretty darn good with its cheap pups, and quality is really decent (just a couple spots where the color was smeared onto the binding, a few other very minor issues). With really good pups I doubt if you could find a better guitar for under $1500. It cost about $185!!! And free shipping! (I really don't know how they can do it).

Same story for me and my current Strat. Sold a Tele and the buyer asked if I wanted to trade for a Squier Strat. I said no, I'm sick of Strats but bring it anyways. We ended up trading because it's better in every way that I care about than the MIA that I played for 20 years.
