Slide Questions...

Are certain materials recomended for different types of guitars? I'm planning on sliding on my standard tuned strat and my G tuned acoustic, will I need more than one slide?

I know it's mostly a matter of preference but I'm curious about what finger most of you guys use to slide.

Re: Slide Questions...

Most slide players go through lots and lots of slides before finding the one that works best for them.

I have glass slides, steel slides, brass slides...even a couple of Coricidan Bottle slides that Curly gave me.

Glass is lighter than brass and I can play faster with glass. But glass weighs less and brass makes the string sound deeper and more solid.

I kinda like steel or or the right glass slide the best.

You need to try a bunch and live with them for a while and eventually you'll know what works for you.

Just buy a few Jim Dunlaps in brass, steel and glass and have at it.

I play with the slide on my little finger so the others are free to play chords.

I play mostly in open D or E....or open G or A.

Re: Slide Questions...

I think it's another one of those things that boils down to personal taste.

I have several different kinds of slides, but most often, I like the thick walled Dunlop Pyrex for its light weight and warm tone. I use my pinky, and I like open G tuning for slide.

Re: Slide Questions...

I use a Coricidan Bottle on my ring finger. I've tried bottle necks, mudslides
and steel. I've found the glass bottle to be the easiest to control and
I like the tone.

Re: Slide Questions...

I like brass and glass. My favorite slides are made by Bigheart? I think???
I like the glass that's closed on the end, is slightly slimmer than average, and they come in blue, red, purple etc. I use my pinky, so I like them to be as small as possible. I was using the white/flame ceramic ones, but they'd break anytime I dropped one, so I switched to glass.

For electric slide with gain, I tend to think that brass sounds best, since it doesn't let all the small transient noises come through.

For awhile, I was playing a lot of slide in a bluesrock band, and never knew what to do with the slide when I wasn't using it. My drummer and I used drum hardware made for attaching a tambourine to a drumset, and created a clamp with a rod sticking out.
I'd attach it to the mic stand before the show, and always had a place to put the slide.
