Slimming down to 1 guitar. Want it to be HSS, need it to be very versatile.

So after spending a while analyzing how I use my guitars, and what I use in different situations, I've come to the conclusion that an HSS strat is the best for me. I am tired of maintaining multiple guitars.

I like a very wide variety of music, and noodle around with everything. Anything from chicken pickin country, to wes montgomery style jazz, to John Mayer/SRV blues, to pop from all decades, to a wide variety of high gain tones, grew up listening to Nirvana and early 2000's alternative/nu metal.

When I play anything with distortion, I ALWAYS use the bridge pickup, and I prefer that it is a humbucker.

When I play cleaner stuff I 98% of the time stick to either a neck single coil, or neck + middle.

So far for all of this I have to change guitars, but now want it all in 1.

I want a good balanced pickup set for a HSS configuration, with 5 way selector switch. Maybe I am asking for a lot, but I don't want there to be a massive volume shift between pickups, even going from single coil to humbucker.

One thing about single coils that I will mention is that I prefer them to be very loud. I have a 1988 American Standard Strat, no clue what pickups are in it but I believe it's the stock alnico 5's that I heard are pretty high output in strats from those years. I to this day have never played another strat that has sounded as full, bell like, and loud as my strat. Maybe the tone from other starts is the true strat tone, but if that is the case, I don't like them. Every single strat I have played in stores sounds extremely thin and trebly compared to mine. Even telecasters. I have a couple of american standard telecasters and when I play them side by side against my strat, same amp settings, when I plug in the strat, the tone is instantly louder and more full. I am afraid of taking my strat apart in fear of losing whatever magic it has, but I am still on the hunt for single coil that can rival it.

Not interested in putting a humbucker in it however, since it has sentimental value and I want to keep it as is.

I am actually on the hunt for a early 2000's American Fat Strat Texas Special/Lonestar Strat, which has the 2 Texas Special pickups and the Pearly Gates Plus which was only made for that guitar.

I am hoping this model can give me what I am looking for in terms of versatility.

Perhaps there is a better pickup set? Advice is welcome.

I would go with STK6 in neck and Custom/59 Hybrid in bridge. For the middle it depends how you use it. Maybe STK6 as well or STK4.

I really liked the pickup combo in those early '00s Fat Strats, very versatile.

Alternatively...

Quarter Pounders in the neck and middle with a medium-to-high output bridge humbucker (JB, Custom, 59/Custom hybrid and '78 are all solid choices here)

I would personally go for brobucker/ssl5/ssl5 - I think you want a little fatter sound than the 59/custom or 78.

Depending how much high gain work, maybe even a dimarzio super distortion/fs1/fs1. Throw a coil split or parallel option on the super distortion - it is far more versatile than many people think.

This, but maybe the Perpetual Burn for the bridge.

I'd say Quarter Pounder neck, 5-2 middle, and 59/C bridge. Then put a S1 on there to tap the neck and split the bridge.

Fender Lonestar w/ PG+ and Texas Specials....excellent choice. I'd just go with that!

But.....consider this if you are not afraid of a little wiring:

59/Custom Hybrid bridge Humbucker
- Tapped (coil of your choice - hotter will be a better single match, but the cooler may be better tone...)
- All RAWK you need distorted with the "Custom" edge. Cleans up nicely with volume control, tapped for single coil goodness

Single coil of your choice in the middle
- For the quack, or mix with either neck or bridge when they are in single mode, or to add a little slice to neck in the neck is in bucker mode

Cool Rails neck
- also tapped
- Fat neck Jazz tones
- Easy cleans
- Single mode for stratty goodness

I'm running a pair of APS-1s and a 59/custom in my blue strat and it covers everything pretty well.

Cool Rails in the neck, Vintage Rails in the middle and a 59/Custom in the bridge.

I think I replied to this on another forum...

Do you gig at all? What are you going to do if you break a string? You’re not going to make everyone wait while you change it...are you?

Drum solo!!

He better have locking tuners.

I'd say Quarter Pounder neck, 5-2 middle, and 59/C bridge. Then put a S1 on there to tap the neck and split the bridge.

I just did a neat little mockup of this guitar on Warmoth, just because I had a little bit of "twiddle my thumbs time" down in the salt mines.

Not pictured: a heel cutaway, the lack of a back plate, a zero fret on a quartersawn all-Maple neck, staggered locking tuners, and an optional TBX low/high pass modded tone control for almost infinite flexibility.

You get a P90 neck, Strat with magnets calibrated to the strings in the middle, and a 3D sounding humbucker in the bridge. You can then tap them for a Strat neck and bridge tone. Given the flexibility of S1 switches, you can also make it so that when the button is pushed in, position 3 becomes neck and bridge in parallel.

Re: Slimming down to 1 guitar. Want it to be HSS, need it to be very versatile.

OK, you're slimming down to one guitar, and you want it to be HSS, and you have a Strat that is too precious to modify with a humbucker. Are you gonna sell this unalterable Strat?

Re: Slimming down to 1 guitar. Want it to be HSS, need it to be very versatile.

I'd keep that 1988 American Standard Strat as you like the neck/middle pickups, and swap the bridge for a Dimarzio Chopper (or similar humbucker in single-coil size). Nothing else gonna be touched except unsoldering/soldering 2 wires.
