Slipping strings

My high e on my AL can't stay in tune. I tried two strings (both 0.10s, D'addarios) and both present the same issue. I tune to pitch and the string noticeably lowers in pitch. If I bend it's horrendously downtuned.

The guitar has locking tuners (I never had such issues with non-locking tuners), which I'm not a huge fan of although it makes restringing a lot quicker. It's also a hardtail (string through), so no moving parts anywhere.

I'm thinking some of you saw that happen a few times. Not my first time for me either but it's never outlasted a string stretch (and yes, all strings are stretch to hell and back).

Any ideas?

Re: Slipping strings

I've heard of locking tuners going bad, but maybe a variant of this as a workaround just on the high E? As in allow just enough slack for about 1/2 turn.

Re: Slipping strings

Have you tried stringing that one strings as if it were a normal tuner? I'd think there is a groove somewhere on the string clamp in the tuner, and the added tension from a bend is pulling the string out.

Re: Slipping strings

Maybe you don't have it clamped down tight enough. The "E" string, being very thin and tuned to a higher pitch (greater tension), requires greater tension from the clamp than other strings.

Re: Slipping strings

I ran into a couple of bad strings before, after stretching & tuning, it did the same thing on the high E string.
After the 3rd or 4th retune, the string pulled off the brass ball its wound around at the end.
These were EB 10s. Hasn't happened since, so I figured it must have been a bad run of strings

Re: Slipping strings

Eh another stretching round improved things. The tuners are locked as tight as it comes, it's the first thing I did. I also suspected the winding but since it happened on two strings in a row it greatly decreases this chance!
We'll see tomorrow. I played for a couple of hours today and she sounds HUGE, bad string or not :)
