sloppy wiring scenario

when my uncle installed my bass pickup, he accidentally flip flopped the hot and ground wires and I'm curious what does this do to my tone?

Re: sloppy wiring scenario

Maybe nothing unless you have two pickups. Then one might be out of phase with the other if one is flip flopped.

Even if your bass has just one pickup, plug your bass in and touch the polepieces with you hand and see if you get a loud buzz. If you get a buzz touching the poles or any other metal attached to the pickup then you need to reverse the flip flop.

Usually when a bass is wired correctly it is quieter when your hands are on the strings then when they are not. Look for that too.

Er, when you say Bass pickup, do you mean a pickup in a bass guitar or are you using the expression - as PRS does - to mean neck/Rhythm position pickup?

As already mentioned above, reversing the two conductors on a passive pickup might affect the screening against RF interference and hum.

Electrical phase reversal can have an effect if you ever record overdubs to a recording begun before the wiring changes. Any time notes overlap, frequencies will cancel each other out, leading to a thin, weak tone.

If the pickup is a vintage-correct Fender design, the brass screening plate on its underside will act as an aerial. (Brace yourself for taxi radio issues à la Spïnal Tap!)

Probably best to put the wiring back the correct way around.
