SLUG pickup wiring question

I am guessing this pickup is going to be pretty dark sounding. I have tried to contact SD 3 times with this question, with no answer.
I plan to potentially run this in a single hb setup. It is currently in its box on my shelf.
Would I be better off to run it with a 1 meg pot vs a 500k?
I may have also found a 1 meg with a push pull to coil split it.
Thanks

Re: SLUG pickup wiring question

1 Meg is what I would use. Just so you know, it's not going to be as dark as you think. It may be 48k, but that doesn't mean it only does sludge and doom type stuff. That doesn't mean it can do everything, but it isn't nearly as limited as people think.

Re: SLUG pickup wiring question

I'm not sure why you'd buy a pup like this, then try to dress it up to be something it isn't. They didn't call it a "Slug" for nothing. Use it the way it was intended. If you don't like it, move on. I recently snagged an El Diablo. Not quite as hot as the Slug, but still, surprisingly "clean". Install it. Listen to it. Then post back. ;)

Re: SLUG pickup wiring question

Sounds like a DiMarzio Blaze on a 7string with tapewounds

Which, imho, is pretty sad and useless except for a narrow flavor of dysphoric high-gain metal that's SUPPOSED to sound dull and synthetic

Re: SLUG pickup wiring question

I would suggest using the push/pull to as a series/parallel switch instead of as a split. That way you can keep the hum cancelation.

Re: SLUG pickup wiring question

I'd actually start with 500k pot, and have a 1 meg pot handy if I needed it. The description of the SLUG is pretty clear, but it seems like something (to me) that could also benefit from a series/parallel switch.

Re: SLUG pickup wiring question

The series parallel idea sounds interesting. I hate soldering more, but it's only one pickup.

I initially thought of putting it into a 3 HB setup with some Tesla Plasma 3's, but that seems like a waste of both sets.
So the Plasma set will be Bridge, middle, then a hexbucker for the neck spot, so 23/17/14.
I have another one like this (23/15/12.5) wired into the triple shots and it's great. It's what I play the most because it'll do everything.

I'm not trying to make it something it's not, but when you spend that much, after waiting this many years to buy one, it'd be nice to wire it for a little more versatility (which I'm sure it has).
I bought it primarily for straight out metal though.

And some clean jazz... ya know..

Re: SLUG pickup wiring question

Funny thing is that it is probably fine for clean jazz, especially if you did thumb-based Wes stuff on a solidbody.

Re: SLUG pickup wiring question

The SLUG is much more balanced than people give it credit for (mostly people judging it on speculation), but you may find the need for a bass cut switch or knob with this particular pickup to get the most out of it.

I was hoping to go pickup - push pull- jack. and avoid a tone knob with a resistor.
