SM-1 neck

Hi Everybody,

I put a SM-1 in the neck of my LP style guitar because I was looking for something bright and clear and I heard really positive things about mini-humbuckers. However, I really don't have the clarity or brightness I was hoping for. I have a 500k pot in both the volume and tone and a 0.22 PIO capacitor. I was wondering if their may be some issues with the wiring, wrong pots/caps or something really simple i'm missing.

Any help would really be appreciated.

Jack

welcome to the forum!

the sm1n should be pretty clear and bright with 500k pots. id check the wiring. if you arent sure take some good detailed pics and post them here for us to look at

Re: SM-1 neck

Tweaking your pots and caps really helps getting your tone eq'd how you want. If it turns out that nothing's wrong, you can lower your cap to a 18 or 15nf to lighten things up a bit. If you want more cut, convert your tone pot to a no load tone pot.

Re: SM-1 neck

I might start by wiring the pickup to the jack, bypassing everything, to hear the brightest sound you can get out of the pickup. You can then experiment with pot value, and deciding if you even need a tone control on it.

Re: SM-1 neck

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I will upload a picture of my wiring as soon as I can so you guys can see if there is anything obviously wrong otherwise I'll try out a couple of suggestions.

Re: SM-1 neck

Mincer, I tried wiring it directly to the jack and didn't notice much difference so it must just be the sound of the pickup in this guitar. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

Re: SM-1 neck

From what you see on SDs description pages, SM-2n could have been the one you were looking for.
