Small Amp Head Options - What's Out there That I've Not Considered?

Re: Small Amp Head Options - What's Out there That I've Not Considered?

What budget, sir?

Would a 2U rack qualify as small.

Let's call the budget 'reasonably generous', but not 'stupid'. Put it this way, I did try to see if I could land a 5:25+ whilst I was home, but time to source one wasn't on my side and I'd have been buying without trying.

That said, the 5:25+ demos I've seen on YT leave a nagging doubt in my mind, but I think that's more in the way they've been done than in any inherent limitation in the amp itself. If PGS Andy had done a test on it, I've no doubt I'd have a much better idea, due to the type of music he tends to play in his demos - he tends to play actual songs that are well recorded, rather than fret-wank himself to death in a fugg of uncontrolled room reverb like half the videos I've seen.

What I have seen that I do like the sound of, is the Transatlantic TA-15, but again, I can't get anywhere near trying one out. What I'm wondering though is whether the 5:25+ would give me everything the TA-15 does, plus some additional options (a full BMT stack on each channel) for instance.

The only other amp that has really caught my eye, is the Engl Powerball, which sounds absolutely awesome in the hands of Dennis Hormes, but may well be too far down the modern gain route for my own tastes. As always though, how the hell do I get near enough one to find out for myself?

I think you'd really really like a TA-15 or 30, Chris. They're the least Mesa-sounding Mesas I've played.

Definitely check out the Egnater Tweaker 15. I own one. Hardly ever power up my Mark IV anymore.

Quite honestly, I've still not looked at one of those. Still, I've got plenty of time to scour the wilds of YouTube before I'm anywhere near a guitar store again...
