Small Amp

Looking for a small amp that I can carry room to room. Wife is having baby so I'm getting kicked out of my guitar room. A small amp would be cheaper than building a new room . I play alot of blues and classic rock(SRV, hendrix, clapton) also looking for some pickups for my strat. Thanks for your help

Check out the Tech 21 Trademark 60. It's portable, versatile and has great tones and features.

The Roland Cube 30 is also neat, but the Trademark 60 sounds bigger. I hear the small Vox modelling amps are great too, but I haven't tried them.

I bought a Roland micro-cube a few months ago to carry back and forth to school with me every week. For its size and price, it really is a fantastic little amp. All the students at school have been impressed with it and a couple of them have bought one themselves. The effects are versatile and useable, and the amp models sound very good. No, it does not sound exactly like a real Blackface Fender Twin, or a Peavey 5150 half stack, but you can't easily put them in a small shoulder bag and carry them for an hour either. And it runs on batteries if you have not outlet. (Roland also just released a 20 watt cube with an 8 inch speaker that would be pretty small)

I also thought the VOX DA-5 was a good practice amp too. I like its bigger relatives in the VOX AD-line a lot. I already had the 30 watt version though, so I opted for the Microcube for something different. I don't regret it.

Vox's DA5 gets my vote. used to own the MicroCUBE but it made way for the former. the DA5 has more features as default & it has that wattage reduction function that makes volume saturation (at lower wattage) so addictive...

no, the MicroCUBE isn't a worse-off but i prefer the DA5 for the features & asking price- one of those numbered practice units that won't make the average guitar sounds tranny...

i'd have to agree with Mephis. the old fender champ amps are really good small tube amps. I havent heard anything better for cleans for that size.

My vote (in situations like these) will always go toward USED Peavey Classic 30's & Blues Jr.s !!!

Used they are such great bargains - every one should have one of each !!!

blood... I have the big version of that (AD30VT)... despite having become less than impressed about it (though it is a good amp) I nearly bought a DA5 this weekend... decided money was better spent speakering my 100 watt amp :smack:

but how do they sound? I've heard good things about the microcube... but the one I heard... well I couldn't judge.

I like the micro-cube. Its not a tone machine perforce but the cleans aren't bad. The gains not too good but reverb flanger and others aren't that bad, for the price.

I'd go with a Fender pro junior or Blues junior or and old champ, if you wanta tube amp. If your looking for a soild state I'd consider something from the Marshall Mg series or Peavey Trantube series, maybe a Fender Bronco. As far as pickups I have a set of Fender Customshop '69's in my strat, IMO they are perfect for playing SRV, Hendrix, and Clapton. and new set won't break the bank either they run about $130 - $150 for the set of 3

I got a Traynor YCV40 about a year ago used for $325 and am STILL very happy with the tones available from BOTH channels as are the people in nearly all of the reviews I've read. Most people talk about the great tone available at LOW volumes and I can vouch for that too. While it is portable I know it's not likely what your after here, however it's little brother, the YCV 20, is much smaller while still having a 12 inch celestion speaker but only 15 watts. And though I have never tried one, the reviews are also very good and if it's anything like my ycv-40 it might be just what you're looking for, and still be useful out of the house too.

Can't comment on jr as I have the special with the with the master volume, gain, middle, reverb etc. Don't use the onboard effects as I have a full pedalboard that covers my needs.

For a 5watter its good and can be loud. Covers my needs - classic rock, blues and someting a little bit jazzey. Cheap and ideal for moding. Changed the speaker on mine to a Celestion Tube 10 (£13 off Fleabay) and this made the world of difference in terms of clarity.

Do a search there are some clips floating about on the board.
