Re: Small Combo amp

those vox amps arent tube amps. there is a tube in there but its not a tube amp. its a hybrid, part tube and part solid state. they are cool practice amps, but not tube amps.

Re: Small Combo amp

+1 on the Vox not being a real tube amp (SS power amp).

That said, tube amp + bedroom volume = waste of time

Re: Small Combo amp

I love my Champ 12. It's a all tube 1x12 combo 1)6L6 2)12AX7s has reverb
and headphone jack and 2 RCAs in jacks for hooking up a cd player etc.
They can be had used on ebay for around $250. :)

Fender Pro Junior, even smaller but sounds good.
I have one and it gets loud but not without overdriving first so it is pretty quiet (due to only a 10" speaker) and it sounds better then anything i have ever heard from its price range and it is even cheaper then some of those marshall mg 100 (solid state)

thats what volume knobs are for :)!!!!

I have a homemade 13 Watter (see link in mt signature, then click on "The Workshop"). Let me assure you - even 13 Watts is WAY to loud for bedroom practice. Tube amps really need to be turned up to start sounding good. Realistically, bedroom amps require a watt or less. I have a Weber MiniMASS attenuator for my amp, but it's kind of silly, cranking the amp then burning off the power as heat (not to mention wearing out tubes.)

Best bet for bedrooms is a modeller, either a small modelling amp, or something like a POD with headphones.

Uhhh, Im going to have a 50watt peavey all tube with dual 12inchers for bedroom practice.

Heard of earplugs? Its like another volume knob.

Re: Small Combo amp

You didn't say how much you want to spend so I'll be all over the map here...

There are a bunch of small single-ended tube desgns out there from the Fender Champ to expensive boutiques. You can find a silverface champ for $200-300 and they sound great. Or you can spend around $800 for something like the little Dr. Z or $1800 for a Carr Mercury.

And there are some very low powered amps like the emery micro-baby or z-vex nano which have about 1 watt and allow you to really crank things. They aren't cheap but many of them sound great and pushing the right speakers they would be amazing in the bedroom or the recording studio.
