Small reviews of all the humbucker pickups i currently own

I thought i give a brief review of the humbucking pickups i currently own for those who might be interested in buying one.I must say that my comments refer to their sound under distortion as i am using them in the bridge position of my fender strats only with distortion(i prefer the mid and neck pu's for cleans)
Fender DH-1:it came stock on my fender strat special.Medium output with a certain tendency to sound bright. Not a bad pickup(overall i would rate it a 6/10) but not at the level of the pickups duncan, dimarzio or emg make.I didn't keep it more than a week in my guitar.Infact i replaced it with a custom custom.
Bass:6.5
low mids:6
hi mids:6.5
treble:8
Duncan Custom Custom(overall 8/10)
Nice pickup.Medium-high output.I liked very much the sweet treble(i never liked the fact that most pickups use more treble than i prefer). The mids are very very prominent. This is the reason that maybe i didn't like so much the sound of the CC when i was practising alone in home but when i used it for rehearsals or the occasional gig......it cuts through the mix like no other pickup.....It's the perfect pickup if you want your guitar to be heard under the most busy mix.The part of this pickup i didn't like is the bass responce.....Not enough bass.....the E and A strings never sounded the way i wanted them to....and that was the reason i changed it for the custom5.
Bass:4.5
Mids:8
treble:5.5
Duncan Custom 5(overall 6.5/10)
Not many things to say about this pickup.I was certainly expecting something more from this one. While i enjoyed the bass responce(which was the main reason i didn't like the CC)and while i could cope with the more prominent treble i hated the fact that there were no mids to make my guitar be heard in the mix.During rehearsals i always raised the mid controll of the amp to 7-8 and still i found my guitar was lost between the bass and drums.I must say that this is maybe not a bad pickup but not for a strat...i am sure in a les paul will be perfect.
Bass:7.5
low mids:5.5
hi mids:5.5
treble:7.5
Di Marzio Tone Zone(overall 7/10)
I have never tried a dimarzio and thought i should try one.It has A LOT of bass, A LOT of mids and reduced treble but with a much higher output than all the pickups i mentioned above.Seemed like a good choice for my floyd rose equipped strat unless you consider a certain "artificial" tone it has.Infact when i first used it it came to my mind what many people say about dimarzio:the difference between duncans and dimarzio is tone.
Bass:9
Low mids 8
Hi mids:7.5
treble:6
Duncan Jeff Beck(overall 8.5/10)
Not many things to say about this one.It is a classic.I don't think there is a guitar player that hasn't tried one.Perfect for soloing....a little bit less perfect for chords. One of my favorite pickups.I don't have many bad things to say about this one but i shall point out what i would like it had(maybe a custom shop pickup???)This pickup needs more low mids and just a touch more bass. That would be the best pickup in the world. This is what my BEST pickup(emg 85) has..............
Bass: 6
Low mids:5.5
Hi mids:8
treble:7.5
EMG 85(and the winner is....9/10)
My favorite pickup.I didn't want to go active because of what people were saying and because it was more expensive than buying a passive pickup.I was wrong. It has the most sweet low mids i have heard. If you want to have a warm sound you need low mids.Perfect bass responce and just the right amount of treble.Endless sustain and high output.Definately not sterile.99% of players use the emg81(which i find extremely trebly) in the bridge.....my advice is to try the 85 in there.
Bass:7.5
Low mids:8
high mids:6
treble:5.5

Re: Small reviews of all the humbucker pickups i currently own

Thanks for the reviews. I actually found this very helpful as I'm expecting a new fat strat to be delivered shortly. I'm going to try and live with the stock DH-1 for as long as I can and really put it through its paces before replacing it though. I played one briefly at the music store and I too thought it was sort of bright. A humbucker with a true Fender sound, if that makes any sense. Typically I'll use the single coils for leads and the bucker for crunchy rhythms. What kinds of single coils do you have in there and are they "balanced" with the EMG?

I'm curious what a Duncan Custom would sound like in a fat strat though. I've almost already convinced myself that this will be the eventual replacement for the DH-1 if necessary. BTW, the specs for the DH-1, as posted by Bill Turner of Fender on the FDP are:

DC Resistance: 16.4K
Inductance: 8.5 Henries
Alnico 5 Mag
Weighted Resonance: Around 1,700 HZ.

And specs for the Duncan Custom per the Tone Chart:

DC Resistance: 14.1k
Ceramic Bar
Resonant Peak: 6.0khz

Not that any of those numbers really mean much to me because I firmly believe it's all magic. ;) But I wonder if it'd be a good, crunchy replacement? Anyone else ever replace a stock DH-1 with another humbucker? What are your experiences with this? Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks!

Re: Small reviews of all the humbucker pickups i currently own

You guys have got to try the pearly gates in a Fat Strat. Awesome sounding.

Re: Small reviews of all the humbucker pickups i currently own

Nice review! Thanks!

I have no experiance with any of these except the Duncans, and I generally agree with your descriptions of what you heard...that's pretty much what I hear from those Duncans too.

The one thing I don't quite agree with is saying the JB needs more bass...I don't think it does.

I do think the CC could use a little more deep bass and just a little more sparkle on top...in a solid body guitar. Sounds great, to me, in a resonant semi hollowbody guitar

To me, the two things I wish were differant about the JB would be: 1. I think the mids are to hard and dense...I'd like to hear a little more space and texture there...it's kind of stuffy it's so full. I think if the mids were a little less full, the pickup would sound like it had more bass and the treble more extended. The thick mids sort of mask the treble and bass in a way. 2. I'd like to see that upper mid peak that's a little hard sounding and tough on the ears removed somehow.

But that's just what I'd like...doesn't mean that'd be right for everyone.

Regarding the Custom 5...I like it, but it's not my tone. I wish it had more mids too. The 59B gets compared to the C5, but I think it's a better balanced pickup, even if it isn't as hot as the C5.

I like the 59B and Custom Custom better. Two very differant pickups but the 59B sounds great in my Strats and CC sound great in my semi hollowbody.

If you removed that upper mid peak from the JB it'd sound too much like other Duncans...somewhat scooped IMO.

That peak is what is so great about the JB IMO.

I guess you love it or you don't. But that peak is the reason you see so many guys posting here about how to tame the "ice pick" high end of a JB and using 250K pots instead of 500K. Using 250K pots with a JB sounds like a blanket over my speakers to me, but whatever...I don't really hear that peak as being ice picky at all...just hard and prominant. Like finding something hard in an otherwise chewy caramel.

I stopped using the JB in my own guitars a while back, but I still install them in plenty of guitars for people who love the heck out of 'em. I just put a Jazz/JB set in a Hamer Studio Custom the other day...sounded great, as usual!

Re: Small reviews of all the humbucker pickups i currently own

Nice reviews...I am currently looking to replace my bridge pickup as I am getting tired of the Dimarzio Super 3 in my strat....What a coincidence because because I actually am narrowing it down to two....The custom custom or the tone zone...I am looking for a bassy thick pickup (I do not want any brightness or thin sound) and from the reviews it looks like the Tone Zone is more of what I am looking for....Am I right?

If you want more bass than a Super3 the Custom Custom won't cut it I dont' think.

The regular Super DIstortion has more bass than a super 3 and if you really need more bass then the ToneZone is the way to go.....it has so much thick bass that it sounds almost artificial to me...I'm not a huge fan of it in combination with my current gear. But people love it so it must do it for them....you might like it too.

Re: Small reviews of all the humbucker pickups i currently own

if the super 3 doesnt have enough bass then the invader or tone zone migh be more to your liking

Thanks for the advice guys...The reason I put a super 3 in was because I did not like the sound of the invader...I had an invader in my strat before...Believe it or not I found it too trebly and harsh...Maybe the high output confused me but I was ticked...I did not find it 'fat' at all...My friend's much cheaper Godin had more fatness to it...So I called up Dimarzio and spoke to some tech guy who seemed to know what I was talking about and he recommended the Super 3...It is oh so close and I have had it in for years but always wanted some for bass and less brightness...Looks like it may be the Tone Zone....Thanks again....

Sorry for getting a bit off topic......NOW back to the humbucker reviews......

you are right about the fact i was judging a whole company by one pickup but i must say i am not a professional player and i do not have the budget to try all the dimarzio range so as to have a more objective idea on how dimarzios sound. But the tone zone does sound artificial. One more comment i would like to make is that the opinions i am expressing in my small reviews are the ones i got from using those pickups in my guitars with my amp. This means that other people that use those pickups in other guitars with other kind of amps might get a completely different sound and have completely different opinions on how they sound. So please just use these reviews to get only a general idea on how those pu's are sounding.

There you go...spoken like a true pro :)

And yes I agree....I do feel with some setups the ToneZone sounds "artificial".

what is up with that? I really like dimarzio's some more so than duncans? i think the tone zone is a hell of a pup in the right guitar, liked it more than a JB by a long shot.
most of the guys i like use dimarzio's and my PAF pro kicks major A$$ and i would not say it sounds "like a dimarzio" or "artificial"?
it sounds like a good pickup should! balanced!
I also love those wolfgang pups and many others hate them? ah who cares use what you like and not what everone else uses!

try a air zone it is the tone zone but more open sounding

Re: Small reviews of all the humbucker pickups i currently own

For everyone looking for sweeter mids than the JB or not as hard......less highs......fat and deep bass.....ther is the BBQ. I am told the Air Zone is also similar.

People say the Tone Zone can sound artificial, but the Air Zone is more musical.

I do however have a friend who jams with the TZ in his LP with killer tone.
