small tube amp- with a nice clean tone

I'm looking for a new amp... the one I have is too heavey, and has too much issues for the gigs I pay now.

I want a small tube amp (a 10'' speaker or even less)... who can get me close to a good fender bassman clean tone... I would even go for a good twin reverb tone (like I'm doing someone a favor- I would love a twin reverb tone).

Anyone knows of a good small and simple amp?

p.s- money is an issue...:blackeye:
no expensive boutique amps please...

Re: small tube amp- with a nice clean tone

youll never get the same tone from a small single speaker as you will from a 4x10 or 2x12. a fender pro junior is small and simple and with a new more efficient speaker might be just the ticket. a used one should be no more than $200 since a new one is $300.
its not a bassman or twin but its a small decent sounding small tube amp.

Re: small tube amp- with a nice clean tone

I know you can only get a Bassman tone from one amp... a Bassman...

It's a little hard to describe the tone of a small amp by talking about different small amps... most of the famous amps are pretty big and heavey...

The important thing to me is a good clean tone that reminds a Bassman...

+1 or a Fender Blues JR, but it has a 12" speaker and more versatile tone controls.

Fender Deluxe Reverb...or clone of a Fender tweed Deluxe.

Or a Mission Aurora.

Re: small tube amp- with a nice clean tone

I like what I've seen on mission amps.. although I don't have them in Israel, and importiong these stuff might be problematic. (I would love a custom made amp!!!!!!!!!!).

We do have here the more famous names (Peavey, Randall, Vox... anything that is more towards mass production).

Could you recomend me on one of them?

Re: small tube amp- with a nice clean tone

blues deluxe & blues junior are the best bang for the buck small combos off the top of my head

the blues series is actually "a modern interpretation of the tweed bassman" if i remember right, so it'd be your best cheap option

or you could just get an ATA case for your bassman, it has wheels & 2 handles. Have that damn singer help you, that's what they're there for :laugh2:

Re: small tube amp- with a nice clean tone

I've shipped stuff to Israel before...
There actually is a MA 5E3 tweedy Deluxe there! ha ha....
The only problems I ran into were that it's expensive to ship there and there is virtually no insurance coverage.
It seemed that packages stay in customs lock down for a longer period of time then in other countries too.

Re: small tube amp- with a nice clean tone

Get a laney 2x12 30w, and put 2 Celetion golds in there ( 50W versions of the celestion blues).

Ooo wow... getting a reply from the company after a simple post in the forum... nice... I should start posting at Microsoft and maybe get a response from Bill... lol...

NOw mission... Can I order something like a loaded board and a chasis (without the speaker or cover)? How much does it weigh??

Re: small tube amp- with a nice clean tone

1. Buy a SF Bassman or Bandmaster head.
2. Get a 1x12" or 1X15" cab that fits the head (custom job, but not that expensive)
3. Add #1 and 2.
4. Instant clean 'small' amp

Re: small tube amp- with a nice clean tone

I second that idea........SF bassman head and 1-15 extension cab. Have a local furniture maker make you a cab from some designs on the Internet. Maybe from some local lighter weight wood like poplar if you can get it there. A webervst cali or Michigan and you are in bussiness....a big fat clean sound.

I don't think a 10" speaker can do clean that well. As the volume increases no matter what a small speaker will just start breaking up, they cannot handle the lows. bass players have been trying to solve the same problem as you for years and have not.

So what you want is an amp with a nice clean warm tone with enough volume to handle a small club gig and that's easy to carry by being light weight. Sounds like the same problem the Army had, they came up with the M-16.

In other words there is no such thing. It's a compromise of weight, output and tone. Somewhere you are going to have deficiencies to achieve your overall goal.

I think a Fender Pro JR will give you the Tone you are looking for.

Re: small tube amp- with a nice clean tone

I have to say Traynor. mine kicks ass. Also I realy dislike the Fender Pro, and ılues Jr. Theysound lifeless to me.

My Traynor has a great clean channel, especially the the bright option on. I can get that sparkly Beatles jangle no problem
