Small tube combo for bed room jammin

Re: Small tube combo for bed room jammin

Maybe something like a Hughes and Kettner Tubeman. 3 channel floor preamp. It is tube and has a built in Redbox and a headphone jack?

I only do bed room level stuff and I couldn't find a good tube amp that would fit the bill. Even my 6 watt Fender Vibro-champ got too loud. I think 30 watts is going to be over kill. If I were you I would look at some of the Tech 21 stuff or the hybrid Vox stuff.

+2, My little '60 Silvertone 1471 at 6 watts is too loud for the bedroom/livingroom. I would look very closely at the Vox Valvtronix amps. You get good tones, variety and are very reasonalbly priced. The power cut switching alone is worth the price.

I use the Hughes&Kettner Crunch Master/Blues Master (Fender tweed-like) and Cream Machine (Marshall-like) for recording. They're 1.0-1.5 watt amps with speaker out/built in power soak/transformer. They stopped making them in 1992 but you can still pick them up on e-bay from time to time for a couple hundred bucks. If you put vintage tubes in them an run them through good speakers they sound great. They sound best pushed, of course, but at very high output the volume at 5 feet away is 100db: you can talk over that.

Wow..... Everybody is saying that 30 tube watts is too loud for home practice.... I practice with a 60 watt tube amp.

I like how my classic 50 sounds at bedroom levels.

Much better than any SS amp at it.

Wow, I just saw one of these on Ebay and it had sound clips. Very nice for a single channel Combo amp.

I had a Soldano atomic 16(same as the astroverb without reverb) and it sounded great and plugged into an anothe 1x12 cab it was smokin' jcm800 kinda tone.

My Mesa Boogie Subway Rocket sounds great at really low volumes, I have it on an end table right next to my couch. I have the gain at 10, and the volume all the way down and it sounds awesome. Its quite a contrast from my other amps where I have a more crunchy sound. It was great for the apartment I used to live in a couple years ago.

Re: Small tube combo for bed room jammin

How silent are your amps?

I use a ENGL Screamer 50 soon to go with a 4x12" cab, and of course I dont have it at 10, but that amp sound great even at 2....

I usually play around 3-4 at home practice.

Try a Screamer, sounds great.

traynor 50blue, master volume makes it sound awsome at any levels, since the tubes are still pushed, and it has awsome marshall tone. great amp, love it, right now im getting awsome hendrix tone at levels that people in the room next to mine cant hear (unless i have door open)

Re: Small tube combo for bed room jammin

Take a serious look at the Vox Valvetronix amps. Thirty watts is freakin' loud, but (most of) the Valvetronix amps offer a variable wattage selector, which is a huge selling point. Plus, it's a hybrid, so it's got tube tone but keeps the roof attached to your house.

+1 my classic 30 can make your ears bleed even half-way up -- you might want to look at something really small -- the epiphone valve jr heads are getting good reviews, and are really cheap, and you can use just about any kind of speaker

+100

I have even thought of getting one of the head versions (for $99.00 you CAN NOT go wrong !!!), and that gives you the very gig option of cabs !!!

Like :

* Open or closed back cabs
* 1x12 / 1x15 / 2x12 / 2x10's and, and, and . . .
* Speakers - V30's / Weber's / GreanBack's and, and, and . . .
* Open wood colour / Tolex / TWEED / furr / 3inch fluff ;)

The options with a $99.00 head is endless and heaps of FUN !!!
