Smallest amp you would take on a gig...

Re: Smallest amp you would take on a gig...

i used to gig with my blues jr and now use my celtic 5e3 quite a bit, 15w with a good speaker works fine for me and i can show up to a gig on my motorcycle :)

Re: Smallest amp you would take on a gig...

My mesa blue angel runs at 18 watts on the 6v6 setting and 30 on the el84 setting. I've used both in live situations and been happy with the push. For clean headroom in my main band which is eleven piece with keys and horns fighting it out for the midrange, I use my 40 watt vibrolux.

for rock'n'roll purposes, I like a 50 watt amp run hard.

Re: Smallest amp you would take on a gig...

Lets say you are playing a small club and you don't want to lug your Mega-Watt amp and Two-Ton cabinets to the gig. What is the smallest amp you would take? Do you favor taking a very toneful small amp and miking it? Or an amp just loud enough to be heard so you don't have to rely on the soundman?

i got tired of lugging my 5150 head and cab... plus soundmen were giving me a hard time about the volume on stage in the smaller places i played... so i switched from the 5150's 4x12 and started using a 1x12 Marshall cab... it's like having a combo but i can pick whatever amp head i want to go with it... I have 4 different heads.

But for most gigs later on in my last band i was just taking a Classic 30 with an extenetion 1x12 cab and a few pedals... much easier to set up.... Sometimes i would just use the combo on it's own without the extention cab... I'd put it on an amp stand and angle it like a monitor... worked for me VERY well!!!! So much so my stack has not seen use in 2 years....

Re: Smallest amp you would take on a gig...

Honestly, it would take a lot for me to part with my Twin Reverb on a gig. But if that really did happen, and my set was all distortion stuff, I could bring my little krappy Korean-built amp.

If I needed decent tone, I could bring a 25W Roland keyboard amp, since I have my ME-50 which actually sounds real good through those. Just not as good as my Twin Reverb, but that amp gets loud, so.... :D

Re: Smallest amp you would take on a gig...

Mesa MkIII. It's a 1x12 combo that's switchable between 15w and 75w. 15w is still really loud and is really good for a singing lead tone, but for rhythm I prefer the tighter sound of the 75w mode.

I also prefer using a 4x12 whenever possible. I find that it has a bigger, fuller sound and doesn't need to be run as loud as the 1x12. Despite that I usually just use the combo by itself 'cause it's way easier to use.

FWIW - I've never played mic'd.

Re: Smallest amp you would take on a gig...

i've never once played out of my home on an amp smaller than a 4x12 1/2 stack. at rehersals or past gigs that's all i've ever used live and i don't plan on changing now.

Re: Smallest amp you would take on a gig...

I don't own anything larger than a 1 x 12 and 30 watts.

I can't see how I would consider buying anything much more than that. I gigged regularly with a Blues Junior and would haul out the Deluxe Reverb Reissue for larger gigs.

Re: Smallest amp you would take on a gig...

I've done 1x12 with my 12" subwoofer cab for a large venue, both mic'd. That's the smallest I've gone while mic'd.

I ran a 2x12 Fender Ultimate Chorus (130W (65x2) Solid State) unmic'd a long time ago in small venues

I think the vibe here is that little 15W amps can do it, big 4x12's can do it

Re: Smallest amp you would take on a gig...

18 watt 1x12 Marshall Clone - kicks butt, plenty loud for small to medium sized gigs with a loud drummer (Davey will argue with me but I that's cool!).

Re: Smallest amp you would take on a gig...

I'd rather have 50w and a 4x12 with my volume choked by the MV rather than having a 2x12 and the tone choked because of that.

Re: Smallest amp you would take on a gig...

Well if you don't mind ss modeling amps, certainly the Roland Cube 30 or 60 is pretty portable as well as the new Vox Valvetronics.

Re: Smallest amp you would take on a gig...

I posted that half in jest. Yeah, I'd take it (I think it sounds great), and it's as small as you can get, but it's louder than a 50W Marshall...

hehe. i didn't know that were THAT loud. i mean i knew the wattage was up there, but it being solid state and all...

Re: Smallest amp you would take on a gig...

my 2x12 peavey solid state chorus gets lost in the mix pretty quickly; I say tube 2x12 amp at the minimum.
